Brooming, what am I doing wrong?

Is it tools or expertise? Just tried to brush the patio. When DH does it it looks like it’s pin new. When I do it 8 just redistributed the leaves, compost and cat fur?

No help I’m afraid, it’s exactly the same with me!

midairchallenger · 01/08/2022 08:46

Were you pushing the broom away from you or pulling it towards you? The former has the most force behind it, the latter tends to leave a mess.

FOJN · 01/08/2022 08:50

If your DH does a good job then I'd probably watch or ask him. I think you need to sweep in sections and use a dustpan and brush to clear up as you go.

I'm going to disagree with PP, I think pushing the brush away from you gives less control over where the mess ends up and you run the risk of scattering it rather than collecting it in one place.

If your DH dies a good job leave it to him.

I find using short strokes towards you the best technique as it stops the stuff flying everywhere in a dust cloud

YorkieTheRabbit · 01/08/2022 09:04

If the patio is a smooth type of stone the pushing the broom is fine. If it’s a rougher type the it’s best to pull the broom towards you as it’s easier to get all the bits out that get stuck in the dips. Sweep in set directions so you make sure you don’t miss anywhere. Always gather up the sweeping’s in a shovel or dustpan and do this as you go. I’m head sweeper 🧹😂

BarrelOfOtters2 · 01/08/2022 09:26

I was pulling. Yes to DH doing it, but he’s hurt his leg….and I’m loath to ask as well, he’ll tell me.

I have never heard it called brooming before, is that a regional thing? Always called sweeping where I am. I have to admit to being a little disappointed by this thread, brooming sounded like it might be something naughty 🤣.

Also, try taking the hoover to the patio to get the bits up!

AlisonDonut · 01/08/2022 09:33

Well a little known fact is that some brooms sweep on the push and some on the pull. So first thing to do is to work that out.

Then use it in the way it is meant to be used. Otherwise it will spray all the dust and crap everywhere.

efeslight · 01/08/2022 09:55

Yes, what the P above said. We have a brush that doesn't work if you use it forwards but works perfectly if you pull it towards you.

Foldingchair · 01/08/2022 10:30

Left hand on top. Right hand lower down. Right hand does the work. Stand in one position and pull the brush towards you. Collect the piles of crap up and tip into bin.

My Saturday job was in a greengrocers. We got taught to brush up at the end of the night.

No advice from me either sorry, I was just here for the salacious replies, having assumed that Brooming was some of very advanced pegging.

fizzywat · 01/08/2022 12:07

I'm baffled by the expertise some have in this. But I'm about to have a dirty big cream doughnut with hazelnut coffee and will read on about your endeavours!

I used to run a soils laboratory. The amount of dust we had every day was phemonenal. I'd have to teach grown men how to do the sweeping up, and it was hourly not daily.

CrotchetyQuaver · 01/08/2022 12:18

I think it's an acquired skill, takes years of practice to perfect.
Not all brooms are equal, you need to find one that suits you.
When I first started working with horses, I was in awe of the more experienced grooms and how neat the yard was after they'd swept it, they used to quite rightly laugh at my efforts!
I'm pretty good now and have my very special favourite brooms and about 15 others that are no good for me to use. Always a sad day when my favourite broom wears out

Seeline · 01/08/2022 12:24

I just clicked on the thread to find out what brooming was!

Sweeping doesn't sound nearly as much fun Grin

addler · 01/08/2022 12:42

DP once called it brooming and I took the piss out of him. Is it actually a (somewhat) widely used term and I've been a dick?! Blush

nokitchen · 01/08/2022 12:52

I have been known to vacuum the patio using my upright dyson..
