Watching her growing up as Uhura on Star Trek was inspiring and important.

What a formidable, intelligent and brilliant person she was.

Yes Op, I agree, as a young girl seeing her playing an important role on the starship was important. May she rest in peace.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 31/07/2022 20:45

Surprised there aren't many news sites covering this, she was so important.

NegroniNonna · 31/07/2022 20:45

She was indeed inspiring and important, what she achieved really mattered.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/07/2022 20:52

That's very sad, she was fabulous. I'm glad that she made it to a good age though.

There's plenty of news sites covering it if you search on Google news. It's mostly U.S sites at present because judging by the times on the stories it's only been announced in the past half hour or so. It'll make the U.K sites in a bit. In fact just looked and Daily Mail has already reported on it.

Also, R.I.P Nichelle Nichols. I've never actually sat down to watch a single episode or film of Star Trek and the second I saw her character name I could instantly picture her. She was that iconic.

Brigante9 · 31/07/2022 20:55

I loved her in Star Trek. Fabulous role model for my generation.

Glenthebattleostrich · 31/07/2022 20:56

She was incredible and to see a strong woman on TV when I was a child was wonderful. She was an inspiration to me.

diamondpony80 · 31/07/2022 20:57

Sad to hear this. Hard to believe she was 89 as I’ll always remember her as Lieutenant Uhura. I greatly enjoyed Star Trek as a child and recently watched a few episodes on Netflix which brought back many childhood memories.

TheFoodtheFadandtheFugly · 31/07/2022 20:58

She was iconic! There are some stand out episodes where you saw her brilliance.

I watched on TV repeats in the 1990s. Must have been iconic to watch her as part of that cast in the 1960s.

I know it is derided but I love that show! RIP Uhura. First star on the left and straight on till morning.

Very sad day as two very important black Americans who were trailblazers in the civil rights era passing away, with both Nichelle Nichols and Bill Russell. RIP.
