Place to stay between Glasgow and Newcastle

Travelling from Cairnryan to Newcastle. Plan to head via Glasgow to stop off at families house. Anywhere worth stopping off or a staying 1 night on route which has something of interest for 2 boys 10 and 13.

It's not very far? Berwick?

We know it's not too far but trying to make it more of a holiday than just visiting family as kids are a bit reluctant to go. We have done most things in Whitley bay, newcastle area
