For about a week my hips have been really itchy. It's much worse at night and now my elbows and the backs of my upper arms are itchy too. Scratching brings no relief. I used aveeno today, made no difference. God its horrible and keeping me awake. No visible rash but there are tiny red dots on my hips. Nothing visible on my elbows. Please help! I'm 51 and menopausal too.

I am awake and itching. Heat rash I think. I am just going to take an antihistamine. That usually works for me.

Low oestrogen causes severe unrelieved itching. Consider HRT

Check it’s not scabies. Rife in university atm. Starts beteeen your fingers. Terrible at night

Scabies?

Ozgirl75 · 31/07/2022 10:40

Scabies always comes on worse at night and the itch is unbearable and seemingly unstoppable. There’s a cream for it though but you have to boil wash everything like sheets and towels. Have you been away recently?

Low oestrogen I'll wager. I used to get this starting in my hands or feet and spreading to arms/legs/trunk. Was definitely worse at night. I'm now on HRT and also take an antihistamine daily which does the trick. Good luck!

We can experience itching at menopause due to dry skin. For some women it’s called formication - a feeling of insects under the skin. I’ve had increased itching on my upper arms and chest and been using E45 cream

You can learn more about it here balance-menopause.com/uploads/2021/09/Skin-changes-during-menopause-1.pdf

Just to add, if using antihistamines these can dry out the mucosal membranes e.g. eyes, nose and mouth so it’s a case of having a balance.

I’ve had menopause itching and son had scabies. Menopause did not wake me at night. Scabies was bloody awful for him. Very easily treatable.

Peri. I’ve started with awful itching on my cheeks/neck, antihistamine and Eurax cream did nothing.

Virus, strep throat, UTI can all cause hives.

Also. My menopause itching (boobs largely ) stopped when I went on a diet. Must have been that I decided. Skin stretching as I porked out.
