If you test positive for Covid are you expected/required to not attend work?

If you are off with Covid do you still get paid?

You definitely can’t attend work and yes you get paid.

PancakesWithCheese · 30/07/2022 23:03

Yes, but the rules have recently changed so it counts as sickness now. No you can’t go to work but each Trust will have its own policy as to when you can go back.

I'm asking because I work in a privately run care home who have now stopped paying staff who are Covid positive but insist staff stay at home. I'm try to get a feel of how other care providers are handling this situation.

We do get something called a Covid bonus which works out to almost an extra pound per hour but it's not a pay rise, it could go anytime and then we just get minimum wage. I don't think we get paid a pension contribution on that bonus money.

At my trust you must be off for 5 days then can come back once you have 2 negative tests. If you keep getting positives you stay off for a max of 10 days.
Paid as normal throughout.
If you're still unwell after 10 days it goes on as a new sickness thing.

tellitall · 30/07/2022 23:38

I work in the NHS I had to stay off for 5 days and could only go back after 2 negatives and we don't get paid. I was really ill but couldn't afford to lose pay so had to work from home.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 30/07/2022 23:45

While positive I’m not allowed to attend work. Need to have two negatives before returning

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 30/07/2022 23:45

Sorry but we do get paid.

Are you in the staff bank?

Sunshineandrainbow · 31/07/2022 01:25

In my trust you can work at home if you feel well enough.
Otherwise off sick and paid as normal like any other sick period .

Not clear cut then

Mu partner works in direct contact with patients in an NHS hospital. He tested positive for Covid last Sunday and is still off as his tests are still positive and he still has symptoms. He has been asked to retest this coming Wednesday, so day 10. If he tests positive BUT is symptom-free, they want him to go in. If he still has symptoms he doesn't need to go in BUT will need a sick note from his GP.

Squiff70 · 31/07/2022 16:29

PS. He is still getting paid for the Covid-related absence.

SirChenjins · 31/07/2022 16:31

Our rules haven’t changed yet - it’s still classed as special leave.
We can work from home if we’re feeling well and go back after 5 days. If we’re not feeling well then we stay off as with any sickness absence. We get paid for the whole time we’re off.

bottleofbeer · 31/07/2022 20:42

Covid is now counted as a sick day at my trust.

TabithaTittlemouse · 31/07/2022 20:44

Have to stay away (obviously). We get sick pay.
It’s recently changed in that it didn’t count in our sickness record but does now.

Are you in a union?

Essexgirlupnorth · 31/07/2022 20:46

Still have to stay off or work from home if we test positive and do get paid but is no counting towards sick record where previously it didn't.

Woolandwonder · 31/07/2022 20:48

Covid is now counted as normal sick leave within my trust although they wouldn't want you to be physically seeing patients whilst still contagious.

hazeydays14 · 31/07/2022 20:51

Same as some of the above, 5 days minimum, 2 negs to come back. Doesn’t count towards sickness for us at the moment and we still get paid the same as any other sick period. I work in a lab with no direct contact and the same rules apply to us as to patient facing staff I believe. Staffing is a nightmare at the moment mind so not sure how long they will keep it this way.
