Shoulder pain after breast surgery

Sorry posting here for traffic

I had a surgical excision yesterday, had a wire placed first then GA
Pain was ok and I slept well but now I have the worst shoulder pain which is radiating into my chest.
It's so bad it's making me feel sick.

I've tried to ring the ward but it's closed now. Just wanted to know if this is normal

I do not want to go to A&E to have all and sundry poking around

Could it be dispersed air? I get that after surgeries and the pain is incredible, although you should have been warned if that was going to be an issue.

however always worth ringing 111, they have have suggestions on how to help if nothing else.

hope it settles soon!

I’ve had that surgical treatment, but didn’t get that pain. I would phone 111 for advice. They’ll talk through their script and will likely book you an appointment at Urgent Care. Or they can get a doctor to phone you.

If you say chest pain to 111 they will send an ambulance.

You need a and e to get checked out. Sorry.

I've had this pain after c section but always thought that was about opening the abdomen

I was going to say it sounds like the trapped wind pain after a c section. My shoulder was agony.
The first time around I actually asked to see the doctor as I thought something was seriously wrong. Have you got any rennie deflatine or peppermint tea you can try and see if that eases anything at all?

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you

Still painful today but self medicating with rum & codeine 😂

The shoulder pain that some people get after abdominal/pelvic surgery is usually due to either blood or carbon dioxide irritating the underside of the diaphragm, which shares its innervation with the shoulder skin. That is not going to be a problem after breast surgery.

OP, it’s probably best to speak to someone who knows exactly what operation you’ve had and what position you were in for it - they’d be better able to advise whether it’s likely to be anything worrying. Maybe the ward/consultant’s secretary will be able to help tomorrow?
