What happens if I get signed off sick?

I’m currently struggling with my job, it’s always been high pressure and all consuming but a new senior person has come in an is micro managing/critical/negative. It’s having a big impact on my mental health, I’m not sleeping well etc.

my first instinct is just to hand my notice in and try to find a new job. I’m trying not to be too hasty though as I’m really well paid and the breadwinner in the house- DH could cover the bills but we would have to use savings for anything over & above like food etc. Also, I’m currently having some treatment on my company private medical insurance which would stop.

I wondered if trying to get signed off for a few weeks might give me a breather to make some decisions with a clearer head. This would put a stop to any future career progress at my current company and it’s seen as weak and ‘not able to cope’.

my question is would I have to disclose this to a future employer? Would they be able to get information as to why I was off? I’ve only had about 4 sick days in the last 15 years so don’t want to ruin my career prospects here but I really do feel like I’m on the verge of a breakdown

thanks for any advice
