Oh do fuck off Will Smith

He's trying to make out that he has been wracked with guilt for the last 3 months and that he in no way things his actions were ok and that hitting someone one was in no way an appropriate way to deal with the sudden an intense feeling he had.

Bull.

He was at a massive public and world televised event. He didn't just lash out the second he heard the remark. He walked all the way up to the stage , then up the steps, then across the stage to hit Chris Rock. If that wasn't enough time to rethink his reactions then how long did he need?

So stop trying to make out you actually a decent person that 'just made a mistake'. You are violent. So fuck off Will Smith.

I particularly like the "Look at me, I'm apologising here" while making a point of mentioning Chris won't talk to him.
It's just self-pity & refusing to take full responsibility for his appalling behaviour, like every abuser ever.

A Black American friend gave me an interesting point of view.
He says that large sections of the American Black community are annoyed with Smith for playing into the racist “violent uncivilised Black man” trope that is barely beneath the surface in The States.
A sort of “look how they behave” kind of view.
Being neither Black or a man I have no idea how true this is

I don't think black men should be held to a higher standard despite of this undeniable trope.
I do think all men should be held equally accountable for their toxic masculinity.

*despite, not despite of, gawdsake

I'd have a tiny shred or respect for him if he'd just come out and said
'since hitting Chris Rock I've realised what a dickhead I am and I'm now doing lots of work on myself to find out what made me think that being violent was ok and to prevent that ever happening again'.

I might even forgive him completely if he also added:
'In order to try and mitigate the harm I may have caused in being a role model to so many children I will immediately donate $300 million dollars and all money I earn from now on, directly to organisations working hard to prevent violence in children which is an epidemic in the US today with child on child gun violence, mass child killings and gang violence being an everyday occurrence'.

Yes to this!

TheWeeDonkey · 29/07/2022 19:18

I just think the whole thing is a shit show and the way that some sectors have painted Jada Pinkett as the vilian of the piece doesn't make sense to me either.

Maybe they are terrible people but he is no victim.

What an absolute nobber. Surely he'll never work again.

He has his own movie company. As long as people pay to see his movies, he’ll be okay.
I’m guessing that’s why he’s out there falling all over himself to say he’s sorry — his sales are in the toilet.

Although I guess I understand the frustration, like a PP I don’t think it’s a fair stance. Because anyone with the ‘look how they behave’ viewpoint is being an imbecile. Will Smith acted like an idiot. He certainly made himself look violent and somewhat uncivilised, but I don’t see how that should make others look violent and uncivilised. Surely only a racist bigot would think so. It’s not Will Smith’s job to behave accordingly in order to placate racist bigots. But he should behave accordingly in order to not be a dick and physical hurt someone.

I don’t think that anyone is saying they should
Just that they are

Featuredcreature · 29/07/2022 19:43

All seemed a bit odd and contrived to me. But maybe I'm just paranoid.

MummyGummy · 29/07/2022 19:59

Nothing about how he acted after indicated he was sorry. Staying in his seat, going to an after party where he was dancing, taking selfies etc.

This is purely a PR stunt to try and reinstate his career now he’s realised the damage he’s done.

Watchthesunrise · 29/07/2022 20:13

I think he's a man under a lot of pressure due to cognitive dissonance...

... because he secretly hates his wife but has to pretend he loves her in public
... because he lives in a vacuuous, ego-fuelled society of people who are not real friends
... because he knows that talent gets you less far than butt-kissing, air-kissing and showing-off in Hollywood
... because he hates all of this and his true self would rather be someplace else.

He secretly really enjoyed issuing that punch and the power it gave him over all of the above.

Watchthesunrise · 29/07/2022 20:13

Hollywood is SUCH BULLSHIT. I'm with Ricky Gervais on all this.

AllAboutMargot · 29/07/2022 20:20

It all started when he went to live with his aunty and uncle.

londonlass71 · 29/07/2022 20:20

Just wondering if everyone came with same energy for Jeremy Clarkdon when he gave a guy a slap.

That said in my eye both are horrendous.

star-87 · 29/07/2022 20:22

He didn't hit him 😑

donquixotedelamancha · 29/07/2022 20:44

Yes, he lost his job and came in for huge criticism. If he'd had that little paddy on camera, like Smith, I suspect he'd never have worked again.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/07/2022 20:46

Smith was defending the honour of his son's friend's girlfriend, so he felt he was right.

noodlezoodle · 29/07/2022 20:58

It's bizarre - if you're going to apologise, don't wait three months to do so!

Will Smith didn't hit Chris Rock?! Are you sure about that?

DorritLittle · 29/07/2022 21:25

Personally I think he did deserve the Oscar. The film is fantastic and it's a highly complex character.

Obviously though, hitting CR was both weird and wrong. And quite sad really.

SaySomethingMan · 29/07/2022 21:56

I don’t understand this post. Did you want him to say it’s ok and that he doesn’t care about what he did or that it’s not affecting him?

If he acted in a new film today, I’d watch it.
Of course he should’nt have slapped Chris Rock but I don’t understand what’s wrong with what he’s saying.

Why is is unbelievable that he’s spent the last 3 months thinking about what he’s done and apologising?

You sound quite sad, tbh
Do you like conspiracy theories?

SpaceGoatFarm · 29/07/2022 22:13

Hate that whole family and their weird therapy talk and how they lie about being scientologists.
