False nails really hurting - is it normal?

I have had acrylic nails with tips fitted for the first time today for a wedding on Saturday but really wishing that I hadn’t!
They were fine initially but now are throbbing and uncomfortable - is this normal and will they settle down? Anything I can do?
On a plus side though they look fab!!

No, that's not normal.

Letsnotargue · 28/07/2022 22:58

I’ve had that before. I have really thin natural nails with no strength to them. I found that false nails had too much curve to them and because my nails weren’t strong enough, it put pressure on my nail beds. It did settle down but I was still glad to get rid of them.

No that isn't normal!

Did they use an electric file?

Nannydoodles · 28/07/2022 23:11

Thanks, Letsnotargue , I think that’s probably my problem too. My natural nails are thin and flaky - hopefully they will settle down overnight and I’ll get them taken off next week. Shame though cause they look lovely and were a treat.

Yes namechange they did. It’s a very busy salon and been there years with really excellent reviews plus I had the owner so I thought it would be fine.

I've never had anything like that. Definitely not normal

ImFuminHun · 28/07/2022 23:15

Not normal

Ishacoco · 28/07/2022 23:16

I get that when I have a new set on, kind of throbbing around the edges - and I've had acrylics on non-stop for 12 years! For me it normally settles down within 24hrs.

Matildahoney · 28/07/2022 23:19

It can happen if the tip sizes used aren't correct, if your nails are short and or thin, and if the tips are long in comparison to the nail bed, they may have filed to much off. Could also be because you're not used to them if you haven't had them before. There are many reasons this could happen.
Bare with them, they may settle as you get used to them

mina14325 · 28/07/2022 23:24

Agree with Matilda. Totally normal, give them 48hrs and any discomfort should go.

Aconitum · 28/07/2022 23:24

I used to have acrylics regularly and would get this sometimes. Occasionally I had to resort to a bit of judicious filing at the edges to relieve the pressure. Mostly I would just slather on Savlon (my go-to for just about everything) at bedtime and it would be a lot better by the next day.

Nannydoodles · 28/07/2022 23:25

Thanks all, hopefully they will settle. I’ll have a couple of painkillers and a purely medicinal brandy and see what they’re like tomorrow.

If your natural nails are thin and flaky and you're not going for long term use acrylics/ gels are no good for you! All acrylics will need to be filed down to make your nails rough and to remove all oils so the acrylic can bond, try pressing each nail gently for 5 seconds, if it stops the throb it's just that you're not used to them and will settle very soon, if it doesn't you may be allergic to one of the chemicals or they've drilled off too much of your own nail.

maddy68 · 28/07/2022 23:26

Are they quite tight? They will ease off. If they don't go back tomorrow.

Polkadotties · 28/07/2022 23:27

Normal. Will go by tomorrow most likely.

Silverswirl · 28/07/2022 23:29

Totally normal. It goes after a night or so

Nannydoodles · 28/07/2022 23:33

A bit late now piecesofham!! Pressing them does actually help so maybe they will be ok. 🤞

I've had that before and I never ever had fake nails ever again. It settled after 3 days but it had this burning sensation as well. Awful experience though.

Plinkyplankyplonk · 28/07/2022 23:41

Yes I had that, it did settle. The second set hurt, but after that it's been fine.

I dont get them done anymore as I taught my self how to do them

superplumb · 29/07/2022 18:31

I've had this a few times. Not sure if it's normal but I have thin bendy nails. Pain stopped after a day or 2

Dalaidramailama · 29/07/2022 18:33

I have had that it’s unpleasant.
