How can I stop thinking bad things?

I keep having moments where sad thoughts will pop into my head. They are mostly thoughts about people I don't know and scenarios that haven't necessarily happened but could happen if that makes sense. I find them disturbing and they seem to happen more frequently recently. I thought they were more frequent when I was stressed but now they can happen any time.

Does anyone know why this is happening or if you have had similar and managed to stop it?

Don't focus on the thoughts - let them pass through you. It is normal to have the thoughts but not good to dwell on them.

Distract yourself (exercise/cooking/watch/download a mindful app/ watch tv).

Stick a mental label on the thoughts eg not helpful, go away.

Replace the thoughts with positive ones.
