Severe pain in hip

I experienced this problem some months ago and it seemed to resolve but it’s cropped up again. I can be walking either just a few steps or longer and then suddenly, with no warning, I get the most severe pain in my outer hip and cannot weight bear at all. It lasts a a short while (up to an hour) before settling. I’m not sure what it can be. I’m overweight so that won’t help but I wonder what causes it. Any ideas? It’s so difficult to get a GP appt these days but I’m really worried that it will just go on me completely one day.

Could be burstitis? I get it a lot in my hip due to a dodgy back and pelvis. Lots of good advice online and on youtube about how to manage it

I have read that depending on where the pain is in your hip depends on what is causing it. As yours is on the outside it's likely to be mechanical and possibly due to you being overweight. If it was in the groin area inside then it's more likely to be a joint issue so arthritis or something like that.
Have you tried any rub in creams to help like ibuprofen or Tiger Balm/Deep Heat? They might help. I get outside hip pain, especially if I sleep on that side but I know it's due to me being overweight

I experienced this for some time, then my hip movement became restricted. My back and leg muscles started hurting and some days couldn't straighten up. Had 2 x physio for muscle issues and not much of an improvement. I got referred to a hip specialist and it transpired I had osteoarthritis after an xray. I'd soldiered on for years and as a result needed a hip replacement that was done last weekend. In my experience my pain just got worse until it was 24/7 and I couldn't leave the house as I couldn't walk any further than a few steps. One of my symptoms was a feeling like the leg was going to give way, and severe pain on the outside of my hip. Of course this may not be the case for you, but I waited for too long and suffered as a result when earlier intervention may have reduced the damage. I'd push for a Dr's appointment if you can. Good luck

@Chipsdontlie you've just described my symptoms! The muscle cramps and pain in the back are new but I've had the hip pain about two years. Already have osteoarthritis in both knees and collar so assuming it's my hip. Doc not a huge fan of xrays for diagnosis.

It's also identical to what mine was like.

It was tendinitis and a tiny labral tear. Got some orthotics to sort out my gait, got on with the gym, focusing strongly upon muscle strength in the legs and back, it's fine 97% of the time now.

Sciatica?

Mine is very on and off and can be set off by anything including just sitting badly or for too long or sleeping wrong, a lot of walking, particularly in unsupportive shoes. Sometimes it comes on suddenly and is gone a short while after if i rest it or take some painkillers, others it bothers me for weeks at a time.

It can be very painful and I feel it most as a shooting pain down my hip.

Try and persevere with speaking to the GP so they can rule things out OP, I know it isn't easy to get an appointment but it's worth pushing for an examination/x-ray/advice on how to manage to pain at least.

Sounds like Osteoarthritis. Ask you go for an X-ray and physio referral.

Chipsdontlie · 28/07/2022 19:58

I hope you can get a diagnosis, given that you already have osteoarthritis I'd fight for an xray. Good luck
