Law of Attraction

Is it real or is it bollocks? I'm seriously worried I'm manifesting bad things into my life..

Happy to help. :-)

How would you be manifesting bad things?

moiraandthebebe · 27/07/2022 22:19

It's real but it's spicy psychology.

When you want something so much it becomes your primary 'manifestation' goal then you look out for more opportunities that will lead you to a place where you obtain it. You radiate positivity and confidence that maybe you didn't have before as much and you attract people to you who may harbour new opportunities. You're more likely to say yes to new opportunities if you feel it'll bring you closer to your goal.

Is it magic? No. It's psychology. But when you're happy and practicing work toward a committed goal, you're generally a happier and more luckier human. Kind of similar to the way if you want a baby you suddenly start seeing parents and young children together constantly or you say you haven't seen a yellow car for a while and then notice several yellow cars on your morning walk.

It focuses you in on what you want.

moiraandthebebe · 27/07/2022 22:21

The law of attraction won't attract you a new arm as an amputee but it may attract you to receive the opportunity to buy a prosthetic kind of thing. It can't make miracles happen but you're essentially conditioning yourself to focus on achieving a goal.

That's what they preach, negative thoughts become your reality which is awful for me.

Hahahaha

It's a load of crap sold to vulnerable/anxious people...

crwnhgow · 27/07/2022 23:25

A load of bollocks made up by a con mam who pretended he could heal the sick.

That really doesn’t work, though. The two goals I currently have involve another person (a) buying my novel and (b) falling in love with me.(Not the same person!)

I’ve done all the work of writing and revising and getting an agent, who is sending the novel out — there is literally no ‘psychology’ I can perform that will make an editor want it, though. It’s out of my hands. I wish it wasn’t so!

And I can’t make someone fall for me, either!

jd88123 · 27/07/2022 23:44

I believe in it after reading "the secret". I think I used it to get a promotion as the job was not on the cards and after a month of so of writing my goals down every week the job came up and even though others were interviewed for it my boss said it was "written in the stars" for me.
In a less helpful way I drove my car when it was past its mot as I hadn't realised it was due and booked it in for a few days after but my cat needed the vet so I was a bit naughty and drove it, thinking please no police, low and behold the police appeared and followed me for 10 minutes. Thank goodness they didn't pull me over. This is an area the police are rarely in and never usually see them. Some people think those things are a coincidence. I do believe it was the law of attraction to a certain extent.
I agree with pp it's about psychology and the more you think about something the more likely it is to happen.
If you like that kind of stuff I'd recommend the book I mentioned. Very interesting but a bit woo.

It's not a bit woo, it's a crock of shit.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 28/07/2022 15:23

I think it's quite harmful if you get sucked into it. I'm sure people living in Ukraine didn't manifest being invaded.

Nc830 · 28/07/2022 15:24

Partly psychology
mostly a con
just a way for influencers / coaches / authors to make money, by selling false hope

oysholily · 28/07/2022 15:27

Can anyone explain then? I got heavily sucked into it last year. Didn't believe it but thought I'd give it a try. I ended up getting back with my ex, a promotion, amazing social life and all sorts. So many coincidences too. Would think of a guy I used to date from years previous and 10 mins later he'd text.

Now that I'm going through a rough patch, I'm fucking terrified I'll make it worse/make it happen.

I'd imagine a combination of you being more confident, confirmation bias and coincidence.

yellowsmileyface · 28/07/2022 16:34

I'm seriously worried I'm manifesting bad things into my life..

This is why I seriously can't fucking stand the fucking law of attraction!

It's manipulative, victim-blaming, toxic positivity bullshit and so very damaging to people suffering anxiety and mental health issues.

It's very big in MLMs because it can be used to convince those who have been set up to fail that their failures are their own fault because they were too negative and didn't "manifest" success.

@yellowsmileyface it's absolutely wrecked havoc on my life for months. If you see my PP, it worked so well for me but now I'm really struggling, I'm so worried about the outcome and am finding it so hard to get out of.

cheekychatta · 28/07/2022 17:09

I'm not sure but I know some vile people and everything has fallen their way . I've known some nice people and they have had nothing but shit on top of shit .

yellowsmileyface · 28/07/2022 17:19

You're giving this bullshit concept way too much power. It hasn't wrecked havoc on your life, nor was it working really well for you.

Take your promotion for example. Perhaps believing in the law of attraction gave you an overall more positive attitude, and that positive attitude caused you to perform better at work resulting in a promotion (well done btw!) Now, do you really want to give all the credit for your work to simply believing in the law of attraction? Wouldn't you rather recognise that you worked hard and gained the promotion on your own merit? That you didn't just magically get this promotion by thinking positive thoughts?

I agree that having a more positive attitude is generally more beneficial than having a negative attitude, but ultimately there is so much that is out of our control.

Awww thank you Biscuit that's so kind!

I guess you're right.. it's just things like me thinking of someone and then popping up, things like that, more people found me attractive, etc etc. it was just a crazy 6 months when I was invested and I can't wrap my head around how that worked but my negative thoughts won't be an issue.
