Misleading eBay photo - am I in the wrong or not?

Purchased a car seat (brand new) on eBay last week. Photos showed the car seat clearly with the matching car seat base, so I assumed this was included. These were not stock images, but actual photos seller had uploaded. Description didn’t mention the base, but it didn’t say much generally so thought nothing of it.

Is this my fault for not clarifying or the sellers for misleading?

Have you contacted the seller about this, and if so, what did they say?

Honaloulou · 27/07/2022 14:37

Is say your fault, sorry. It said 'car seat', and you've bought a car seat.

ComDummings · 27/07/2022 14:38

I would say if it wasn’t mentioned I’d assume it wasn’t included.

Assuming the seller said/says the base is not included, is the base available to buy (anywhere) at a price which makes the eBay purchase still worthwhile? Or would it be cheaper to buy the seat plus base new from a retailer?

RainbowsMoonbeams · 27/07/2022 14:39

Haven’t contacted them yet. Wanted to see what the general consensus was first.

I made my offer based on it being both, as it was overpriced just for the seat!

Fladdermus · 27/07/2022 14:40

I would have assumed it included the base too. I've never bought a base seperately, they've always been included with the seats I've bought.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 27/07/2022 14:40

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble It is a little overpriced if it’s just the car seat. But the cost of returning would be even more money.

Pics please 😊

SparkyBlue · 27/07/2022 20:21

If it was described as car seat I'd have assumed just the seat as the bases are usually expensive by themselves depending on the brand so I'd definitely expect to see it in the description

PrezelwithMarmite · 27/07/2022 20:25

Car seat would mean just the seat.
If advertised as seat with base then that's what you'd get.
Your fault sorry.

plinkypots · 27/07/2022 20:26

If it didn't mention the base I'd have assumed seat only. They are two separate items.

KateRusby · 27/07/2022 20:27

What size of car seat? Newborn they normally bought separately. The next size up (whatever Joie 360 etc are) I'd be more inclined to expect it to be included.

JaniceBingALing · 27/07/2022 20:28

You definitely should have clarified prior to purchase, in my opinion.

Driftingonawave · 27/07/2022 20:30

Yeah, having worked somewhere that sold car seats I’d never presume the two go hand in hand. They’re typically sold separately as they’re not always needed or compatible with every car etc

NiqueNique · 27/07/2022 20:30

I’ve been on eBay long enough by now to know never, ever to assume! If it isn’t in the listing I would always check before bidding/buying.

Antarcticant · 27/07/2022 20:32

If you were buying it new, would you expect it to come with a base? If so, I think the picture is likely to be misleading.

I've seen sellers specify that even unrelated items that happen to be in the same shot as the one being sold, are not included. I wouldn't personally assume an unrelated item was part of the sale but if it's two things that normally come as a set, I would,

Kezzie200 · 27/07/2022 20:33

How are they advertised when buying new. Are bases generally a separate purchase or usually bought as one item and one price?

If they are usually separate then I would have assumed just the seat and if I'd wanted it, contacted to clarify.

With ebay I clarify anything I can think of! The last tie I bought mentioned potential cleaning - the guy writes it on every single clothing item he uploads. I contacted him and asked if that particular tie needed cleaning or had any marks.

If car seats are traditionally bought as one then I might complain.

I complained about an engraving on a glass item recently bought. It wasn't mentioned in the text and it wasn't clear from pictures. Looking again after knowing about the engraving, you could see it on the photo edge but it still looked like it could have been a reflection. She took the item back and refunded.

YABU to buy a car seat on eBay especially when they've sent it in the post. You have no idea how roughly couriers handle packages and that seat could have superficial cracks that would now render it useless in an accident.
When you buy seats brand new, they are especially packaged to withstand this damage in transit. An eBay seller chucking it in any old box without the correct shape polystyrene bits to keep it protected in transit will result in a damaged seat even if you can't see any damage. That's why insurers will replace a seat even in a very low impact accident. Please don't take the risk.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 27/07/2022 20:40

I'd never buy a 2nd hand car seat. Doesn't all the advice say not to?

RainbowsMoonbeams · 27/07/2022 20:48

Seller got back in touch. So it turns out is is included, but has been sent separately. Tracking showing it’s coming tomorrow .

Just to be clear, as I said in my OP it is a new car seat from a seller that has a physical store and an eBay store.

How bizarre it isn't in the listing, what a waste sending it if someone didn't need one and wasting expecting it

Kez200 · 27/07/2022 22:25

Good result

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 27/07/2022 22:53

Sorry. Yes you did say that.
