Passport delays

Posting on behalf of DB and his DS. They 'lost' their passports over Covid and applied recently for new ones. He rang up the passport office who told him it would take 10 weeks for them to be processed but he's supposed to be going away with his DW and PIL for 2 weeks in the third week in August.

My DM told him to write to his MP to see if they could help.

Passport people told him twice, don't go the passport office as it wouldn't help. He's based in London.

Anything else he can do? Anyone got any stories of hope?

When did they apply? If its less than 10 weeks ago, then there won't be any help.

More than 10 weeks if can be expedited the week before I believe.

Should have tried for fast track appointments rather than relying on the normal service

I'm sure he did try for fast track. But who knows with my DB?

Not all applications are taking forever so he might strike lucky, you never know.

I've done 2 passport renewals this year. Mine and DD3's, who was changing from a child's passport to her first adult one. Both were done using the online application forms and providing our own photos.

DD3's new passport arrived in just under two weeks. When we did mine a few weeks later my new one arrived in less than a week.

It can be a bit of a lottery maybe, but that has been our experience.

Don't contact the MP, they've got no influence.

I still personally can't believe why, when he originally knew they were lost (last year) he didn't order his passports then and not now, before he's due to go away!

My sons took 14 weeks!! I wrote to MP and emailed the upgrade team informing them I was travelling on holiday in 2 weeks time (search other passport threads as one details all the contact details). It worked as it arrived really quickly,

Well that sounds a good outcome.

DB would be helping his FIL as a sort of unofficial carer (FIL is a paraplegic) and his MIL has paid a lot for travel and accommodation for this holiday.

My friends came in 4 days and was fast tracked. You can’t get in to the passport agency buildings without an appointment. They do text you when it’s been created.
