I will arrive in London earlier due to a change beyond my control.
You used to be able to just ask the driver of an earlier bus if he had space. Is that still possible?
I know that if I call or ask at the desk they'll give me the official answer that I have to buy a new ticket (mine cannot be changed) so there's no point asking NE.

I am not sure it is the case now. I remember booking the wrong time and I had to pay extra. However, if the coach is nearly empty, why not shove more bums on seats?

It will be up to your driver and if seats are booked up further along the route.
