What to do for a vegan bbq and where to shop!

I'm hosting a little vegan bbq at the weekend and would like some simple ideas what to serve.

I'm thinking some vegan burgers on vegan brioche with veggie skewer kebab things and salad dishes, green salad, rice salad, pasta dish and coleslaw.

Where would you shop for this? I need things like vegan mayo too. Where's best etc?

Linda McCartney quarter pounders are great, asda do vegan brioche buns. Sainsbury's have a great bbq range with kebabs etc. Follow your heart or hellman's for vegan mayo

I bought all those things at my local Co-op yesterday

You'd find that in all supermarkets these days.

I could get all those at my local Asda or Tesco. Make sure the pasta is dry not fresh (i.e. made without egg).

Corn cobs? They're nice with a BBQ.

Heinz vegan mayo is good too. Just a shame about the price tags for some of these vegan products!

Do you know if your guests eat the 'fake' meat. It can be quite divisive. I really like cauliflower steaks done on the bbq. This recipe is really simple and tasty.

I find Sainsbury's and the Co-Op best for vegan condiments.

I recommend this book so often I do sometimes wonder if people think I'm on a retainer, but Rukmini Iyer's The Green Barbecue is AWESOME for recipe ideas (I think you can buy and download the Kindle version, if you're in a hurry).

I just love chunks of nice veggies cooked on the barbecue with green salsa verde.

AppleBottomRats · 25/07/2022 19:08

You NEED corn on the cobs.
Hellman’s garlic vegan mayo is good, they sell it in all the main supermarkets.

Corn on the cob!

also wrap sweet potatoes in foil and cook in the coals, then serve with vegan butter with garlic and chilli smashed in to it. Divine!

Pineapple is gorgeous done on a bbq.

Iwanttenofthose · 25/07/2022 19:15

Marinate a load of veggies (peppers, courgette and aubergine work well) and large chunks of firm tofu in jerk spice rub and thread them onto skewers. Easy peasy.

imakingsmummy · 25/07/2022 19:38

Do you just put corn on the cob straight on the bbq? How long for?

I steam or boil it first, then coat it in a spiced butter (I'm veggie rather than vegan, so I use butter, but you you could use oil or a vegan butter substitute), and put it onto the coals for a couple of minutes on each side: you're chargrilling it, rather than cooking it.

If you're very organised, you could warp it in foil and steam it on the BBQ, but it's quicker to do it on a hob first.

Yep no need to do anything to it, just stick it on there and turn regularly until it looks done. You can do it under the grill the same way as well.

Sounds delicious!

M&S do the best vegan coleslaw in my opinion.

I can also recommend the Linda McCartney burgers, they taste good and are a lot cheaper than some of the other fancy vegan burgers around at the moment.

Richmond BBQ flavour meat free sausages taste like frankfurters and would be lovely on a BBQ.

This is my go to potato salad recipe

Another vote for Richmond sausages, and the best vegan burgers imo are beyond burgers, currently £3 a pack of 2 at Asda (that’s cheap, they’re usually £5).

I love Aldi vegan potato salad - cannot tell the difference.

I also have garlic bread and a jacket potato.
