Having my two nieces over for a few days in the holidays and want to make sure they have a good time and I come across as the aunt that knows what's cool! What do 7-11 year olds like? And what would be good ideas for gifts etc? I've heard The youngest loves LOLs but think it's a bit young for the older one (who is probably the more tricker to buy for and entertain)!

DDs are 7 and 11. They like the entire art/ crafts/ stationery section of The Works! My 11 year old likes anime, dr who, watching very random things on YouTube, art, reading. My 7 year old likes minecraft, watching annoying youtubers shriek about minecraft, board games, elaborate imaginary games with little plastic animals, Disney plus, drawing, annoying her sister. However, I just saw that you want to be the aunt that knows what’s cool. I don’t know what’s cool, neither of my DDs are cool, I don’t think DD2 knows what cool, DD1 would probably say the cool girls are into fashion and make-up and boys.

I have an 8 year old ds and he is definitely not cool! He likes to do maths puzzles for a start!!! As far as what he and his friends like ( both girls and boys in his group) I would say Disney is still a hit especially Encanto. Harry Potter and Minecraft are big favourites too. The girls seem to like sparkly glittery things, making things like bracelets and drawing. The Works is definitely a good idea for books and art/craft stuff. Ds's best female friend loves football and Pokemon! For things to do- mini golf, laser quest and climbing walls are very popular.

Dancing
Gymnastics

YouTube
Roblox

Nails
Art

She's a bit of a mixture. Some of the stuff she's into is probably more suitable for teenagers but that's just what her and most of her friends are like. She also has a younger side to her and will play with Barbies and stuff with her 5 year old sister.

My 10yo loves loads of the things already listed but she also loves shopping and going for a coffee (hot choc/cold drink in her case). Anything that makes her feel grown up.

I've a DS8 who loves reading, gaming, computers, and afternoon tea. His ideal day would be cinema, a wander to a book shop and finish with an afternoon tea.

He also likes swimming, making up games, writing stories, playing on his switch, card games like uno, dobble, and traditional ones like take two and 31s, as well as going on his scooter and kicking a football around.

tinylittlecaterpillar · 25/07/2022 14:37

Almost 8 year old DD.
Into making things from fimo, arts and crafts, writing stories and illustrations.
Gymnastics, animal crossing, YouTube!

Guardup · 25/07/2022 14:56

What a lovely auntie! I have 2 girls around that age. All these suggestions are great. If I was a better mum my girls ideal day/weekend would involve:

Baking (in the morning for some tea and cake in the afternoon)
Board games or card games (they would play for as long as I can stand)
Any form of swimming (pool or beach)
Home Manicure/ Pedicure
Making my lounge a cinema (bringing a mattress to the floor to try and make some sort of comfy chairs with cushions and the sofa and said mattress)
Late bed time with the promise of pancakes in the morning- but the table would have to be made like we are at a hotel!
Being able to watch as much YouTube of people opening LoLs as possible without me moaning. I just don’t get the appeal?!?!

Have a wonderful time with them
x

Thanks all you wonderful people! I've got loads of ideas and a slightly better understanding of what children this age like now! Love that arts and crafting is still a big thing, though I'm not sure I will ever see the appeal of unboxing on YouTube haha xxx
