If you were going to walk along the river from Tower Bridge to Greenwich

Which side of the river would you walk on and does it make much difference to the distance?

I did think north side so we can go through the foot tunnel, but I suspect south side is a nicer walk?

Thank you!

Well, I walked the South side many times so I'm probably biased. On the North side the Isle of Dogs can be quite interesting and I do love the foot tunnel, but I have no idea what the rest of it is like. I always assumed it would be quite boring! I like the mix of old, industrial and new on the south side.

Either way you spend quite a lot of time not next to the river. I think it's worse on the north side. I've cycled Tower Bridge to Greenwich many times on the south side and it's mostly quite nice.

Yes, this is what I'm thinking.

I'm taking a group but won't be the most qualified guide! We arrive in London on nothing side and should hopefully see the bridge open at the start of our walk, which will be great, but of course we can't cross it while it's open!

The tunnel would be a point of interest, but not at the expense of the rest of the walk.

How are you going home at the end of the walk? You could always walk through the tunnel from south to north and then get the DLR at Island Gardens instead of at Greenwich. The view of Greenwich from the park that the North tunnel entrance is in is very pretty.

Jubilee Line. I don't think the DLR goes near where we need to be, but I'll have a look, thank you.

Or if you're getting the Clipper back then you can walk through the tunnel and then walk about 10 mins back upstream, mostly along the river, to catch it from Masthouse Terrace.

You can get the DLR and connect to the Jubilee line at Canary Wharf (get off the DLR at Heron Quays), or you can get the Thames Clipper and catch the Jubilee line from Waterloo.

I've done the north side from Tower to Canary Wharf several times. I find it very interesting, plus I think you might be more likely to get sun on the north side. On the south side you can be in shade cast by the old warehouse buildings.

This chap writes about bits of both the N side and the S side in his blog. Look for articles tagged The Thames.

Some historic pubs on the N. Side - Prospect of Whitby, for example.

I've done the south bank route twice, both times with Ramblers groups, which is probably an indication that it's the best route! The old bit of Rotherhithe is quaint and historic as it's where the Mayflower sailed from. There's also a city farm a bit further on.

I've walked Wapping to Canary Wharf too. Not sure how much of the north route is next to the river, especially to Island Gardens.

I'd do the south route. There's a short section through a housing estate in Deptford that isn't very nice but it's not a problem.
