Portsmouth ferries - anyone?

Has anyone travelled from Portsmouth over the weekend? What has it been like?

We are travelling tomorrow and don’t know how much more in advance than usual we should set off.

What ferry? There are quite a few to choose from.

Nibblonian · 24/07/2022 18:29

Portsmouth to Caen absolutely fine yesterday morning.

Any ferry, I’m mostly concerned about the roads.

A fortnight ago at 8am Sat the roads were fine (Portsmouth-Jersey)

The ferry port is just off of the motorway. I can't ever remember a time that the roads were blocked due to the ferry port. It only usually gets bad if there is a serious accident on the M275. I really wouldn't worry about too much traffic. It usually moves. What time are you turning up?

okeyokey · 24/07/2022 18:43

If you are arriving before or after morning rush hour, the roads should be just fine, according to a local to portsmouth delivery driver.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/07/2022 18:43

If its any help DH did his Yorkshire Portsmouth commute today in the normal time.

Our ferry departs at 21:30, so I guess our only concern is avoiding rush hour to get out of London. Which is fine, but the Dover reports freaked me out! (even though it’s not the same, I know I know).

It's not the same at all, you should have no bother.

@NeedleWielder you'll be absolutely fine at that time for Portsmouth. I work next to the Port and have experienced no issues whatsoever in the last few years. You'll sail in 😁

BeanCounterBabe · 24/07/2022 19:58

This is reassuring. We are sailing on the 13th August overnight to Caen. I happily spend extra £100s to avoid the hell that is Dover-Calais. We live in SW anyway so it saves the extra mileage to Dover.
