Can you be allergic to a certain alcohol?

I've googled and it says research shows no evidence that different types of alcohol (so spirits, wine, alcopops), effect is differently

However, I can easily drink a few whisky drinks. Alcopops. Even vodka.

Wine makes me unwell. What is it about wine? Last week I had my first glass in about 2 years, after it made me horrendously unwell from one glass.

Same again - horrific drugged feeling from just one glass. Couldn't walk in a straight line. Had to lay on my bed. Banging headache and vomiting. From one glass!

The wine I tried 2 years ago was white wine. This was red (echo falls).

Why do I react so badly to wine?!

Should add that I don't really drink. Probably max 6 times a year and never get drunk

Tannin. I can't drink red wine, fortified wines, some whites, tonic water or tea without being sick.

It's probably the sulphites in the wine.

Probably an ingredient in it.

I tried rhubarb gin for the first time a few weeks ago at a cocktail party. My lips became so swollen I had to go home, I looked like a blow up doll!

ClocksGoingBackwards · 22/07/2022 20:35

People can be allergic to the sulphates in wine.

Apric0tjam · 22/07/2022 20:36

Wine that's heavy in sulphites triggers my asthma. And sometimes makes my ears itch on the inside. So I think the answer is definitely yes!

Fond · 22/07/2022 20:36

I didn't know about the sulphates! I just assumed they were in over drinks

For example my favourite (judge away), is a blue WKD Blush I don't have many but it's never made me sick

One wine and I'm on the floor

i can drink wine no problem but prosecco or champagne makes me black out

PlanetNormal · 22/07/2022 20:41

It could be the tannins in red wine, it could be the sulfites which are used as preservatives in modern industrially produced wine.

Whatever it is doesn’t really matter because if wine disagrees with you, you should drink something else which doesn’t. I enjoy drinking wheat beer, but there is one popular brand which is fermented in the bottle and the strain of yeast used disagrees with me, so I stick to different brands.

TheLeadbetterLife · 22/07/2022 20:42

red wine has higher histamines than other alcohol. The darker it is, the more it makes my nose block.

UmbaRumba · 22/07/2022 20:44

I can’t drink spirits , beer or cider . I’m fine with wine though
Do you think it’s an age thing ?

Itsthelookitsthelook · 22/07/2022 20:53

Red wine gives me a red blotchy rash from my chest all up my neck onto my cheeks but never any other food or alcohol

Equiphant · 22/07/2022 21:04

Beer is mine. I always hated it. When i was about 21 i thought “grow up, everyone drinks beer and it’s nice and cheap. Get to like it”. So i tried. Drank two beers. Vomited for HOURS, have never felt so ill.
cava, however, i have always been able to drink like a professional.

sellebrayshone · 22/07/2022 21:43

A friend of mine comes out in a rash when she drinks certain types of white wine

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 22/07/2022 22:17

Wine makes me blocked up and sneeze. I can drink Prosecco without the same effects though.

godmum56 · 22/07/2022 22:22

With me its cider that seems to make me tired drunk. Its not the bubbles because champagne doesn't do it. Its the good cider, not cheap stuff made from chemicals.

My late DH had a PROPER allergy to gin. it used to make his face puff up and he got wheezy.
