What to do if garage breaks your car

I took my car for a pre mot to see if it was worth putting it through one. It came back with only minor problems such as lightbulbs and rear break pads to be stripped and cleaned. So I booked it in for a week later to go through full mot

On the day of the mot I pulled up and the car was running completely fine and expected it back within a couple of hours. I got a call from the garage 7hours later asking if my hand break light was always on. I don’t have a hand break stick I have a little tab at the side of the steering wheel. I told them I didn’t know what they meant by light but the hand break was fine when I pulled up . They said somethings happened with the hand break and they are waiting on a sparkie to look at it. They keep it an extra night. They phone the next day saying they can’t work out what’s happened but the hand break is not working so they are phoning the Renault garage to see what it could be. They keep it another night. They phoned me the next day saying the car needs to go to a Renault garage to be fixed. I pick the car up not knowing what to do and paid for the other work they had done. Stupid, I know I should of questioned it there and then! I find garages so intimidating.

i get home phone the Renault garage they are fully booked for a month and it’s going to cost me £1200 to be fixed and mot.

I put money aside for the car but as they said it would pass I spent it on my kids. I wont be able to get to work as it is in the middle of nowhere. I can’t pay for my car without a job and I can’t get to my job without a car.

they said they didn’t break it. I would of noticed when parking outside that morning that the hand break was not working. The garage is on a hill! the car did not roll back and there was no warning in the dash board.

I do not know what to do. I put my car in being told it would be back in an hour and only cost £200. Who do I contact to say they broke my car? how do I even prove that it was fine when I parked it in their garage?

I would be asking for their insurance details or for them to resolve the issues they have cause. You have proof from the pre MOT of what was wrong. They’ve either messed up with the electrics or broken it. Have Renault said what the fault is so you can figure out how it might of happened?

A good shout might be to also check your insurance details and perhaps call them and ask for some advice?

Thank you so much for your replies. I have been up all night stressed! The garage said it is the hand break motor so when phoned Renault yesterday I said that’s what need to be done but the mechanics were busy so only spoke to the receptionist. I am going to phone Renault again today to see if they know how this could of happened.

It probably isn't a case of they "broke" your car. If the rear pads needed attention then maybe the fault occured while they were doing that? Sometimes things don't come apart as they should, not due to hamfistedness on the part of the mechanic but due to the age and/or condition of the parts being looked at.

Personally I have never been a fan of switch operated park-brakes, the actuators often seem to give trouble (and as you are experiencing, not cheap or quick to fix) so I am glad that both our cars still retain good old fashioned hand-brake levers.
