Must take items for self catering villa holiday?

BlancmanegeBunny · 21/07/2022 19:50

Going on holiday on Saturday to a villa in Spain, I usually have packing down to a tee but haven't been for a few years and I'm sure I must have forgotten something!!
What are your essential item bits and bobs?

We usually just take carry on bags, so we don’t take much, I usually take a small pack of the tea bags we like and just buy whatever we need when we arrive, I love to trip around a Spanish supermarket, have a fab holiday.

dementedpixie · 21/07/2022 19:57

Extension cables
Multi point USB chargers and all the cables that plug into them
We took peri salt, peri peri mix, fajita mix, angostura bitters (for my long vodka!), a meat probe (for the bbq food), tea bags, some washing pods and dishwasher tabs, sponge, cloth, washing up gloves, clothes pegs, sharp knives

dementedpixie · 21/07/2022 19:59

Also took some shopping bags

NormalForNuneaton · 21/07/2022 20:00

We've just got back from Spain but, for once, struck lucky in that the only thing we had to buy that was missing was a plastic chopping board. There was only a wooden bread board one in an otherwise very well equipped kitchen.

Previous experience has meant we've always taken a sharp knife, some small sachets of herbs and spices, our own preferred tea bags, washing up cloth, tea towel, bin bags (for the bins but also for dirty washing, wet items etc) etc

Not essential but handy ....ice cube bags if you have freezer

pudseypie · 21/07/2022 20:02

Washing up sponge / cloth, first aid stuff like bite cream, plasters etc, travel plugs, tea bags, small jar of coffee. Not much really, just bare essentials.

dementedpixie · 21/07/2022 20:04

We just bought bags of ice there
We did buy an extra chopping board and a couple of serving platters from the China bazaar shop we found that stocked every item in the world you might need!

PlopPlop · 21/07/2022 20:05

Agree with the travel plugs adaptors that have USB ports in them!

other than that we just buy everything when we get there, can usually find everything we need and couple of new things to try when we head to the supermarket the first morning

Malariahilaria · 21/07/2022 20:12

We are away. I also had forgotten what's needed and am now adding to next year's list. Charging cables, adaptors for 8 rooms. It's staggering how many things we now need to charge that we didn't even have 10 years ago. Set up roaming on phones before you go. Ensure that you have all relevant passwords for access to Hotmail, apple id etc. Villa told us it had WiFi but really it's has WiFi for one person to search on Google for 5 mins. Yes this post is all about the tech but it's been the biggest challenge when it really wasn't a few years ago!

MarmiteCoriander · 21/07/2022 20:18

Is there a lidl or other supermarket nearby? Have you been to this place before and know what is normally included?

  • Non stick foil and/or non stick baking paper to use in the grill
  • Tongs. I love a pair of small tongs!
  • Extra strong tea bags and nescafe. I found instant coffee hit and miss in Spain
  • Pot noodles or other snacky, quick things
  • 1st aid kit including nurofen, plasters and thicker plasters for foot blisters from all the walking
  • Sea sick meds if you will be on a boat/ferry at any time and get seasick like me!
  • Sunnies, hat sunscreen and attire to wear to/front the pool/beach
  • Chapstick type lipgloss. I always get dried out lips in the sun
mbosnz · 21/07/2022 20:21

We always take two good knives, one big, one small, a good chopping board, and a pot with a steamer.

dementedpixie · 21/07/2022 20:37

We quite often go to Spain so dh bought 4 extension cables with the 2 pin plug so we plugged them straight into the sockets and then we needed fewer adaptor plugs.

Chargers for everything including toothbrushes (forgot it one year and had to buy manual toothbrushes when they all ran out of charge!)

Power Banks for use on the plane/when travelling.

Pringles!

Trainfromredhill · 21/07/2022 20:40

A sharp knife, pair of scissors, Tupperware box, few food bags and clasps, kitchen foil.

TwoBlueFish · 21/07/2022 20:55

Tea towel,
cloth for wiping surfaces
dishwasher tablets
washing tablets
face cloth
shopping bags
tea/coffee
salt/pepper
second SIM with a data package
corkscrew/bottle opener

Sunnysal · 21/07/2022 20:57

They sell Pringles everywhere!

dementedpixie · 21/07/2022 20:58

We have them for the plane journey
We found some different flavours in Lanzarote

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 21/07/2022 21:08

Mosquito repellent

MarmiteCoriander · 21/07/2022 21:10

I forgot: ear plugs and eye masks.

You never know whether the curtains will be black out or there might be flemenco music playing very late nearby! 💃

BlancmanegeBunny · 21/07/2022 21:14

I seem to have everything covered !!!

We have extension leads with usb ports and cables, tea, a sharp knife and some season. I have booked a click-and-collect order for the morning after we arrive so we will be well stocked. The food probe is a good call but we won't be using the bbq so not necessary.

We made our own in lanzarote after buying the ingredients there

Iloveartichokes · 21/07/2022 21:38

We’ve just had two sc holidays (in the UK).
As well as the ideas above, I’ve included for our next foray sachets of salt, pepper, mayo, mustard, tomato and brown sauce plus BBQ and salsa dips (given out at McD’s and other restaurants visited). In that way I’m only taking what I need rather than buying jars and bottles.
Have a brilliant time.

Aria999 · 21/07/2022 22:03

Covered by other pp.

We are away at the moment and I could have usefully added to my list:

Half of DDs clothes
Anti histamines
My leggings that I meant to pack and didn't

(Packing was interrupted by DS at some crucial moments)

StrangeCondition · 21/07/2022 22:06

Salt and pepper?!
