Eco function on washing machines

What does the eco function on washing machines do? I know on my machine the eco cycle can go on for hours where as there are quicker options.

Does the eco function save on electricity? Is it kinder on bills?

You see I think my mother might be developing dementia. She is obsessed with laundry and has an OCD or a paranoia with high temperatures and pre washes and extra rinses. There's something going through her mind that the laundry isn't getting washed properly or she needs to get this clean.

If the eco function saves on electricity maybe I could get her to drop the temperature and it might help appease her for wanting a long wash without the need for a prewash and extra rinse.
I don't know. Either that or I need to save for a new washing machine and once I have the funds saved, I break the current machine and buy one that she won't be able to operate like a smart machine. Or a machine where the extra functions aren't easily visible.

Yes, the eco function is the most economical. It takes longer but uses less electricity.

The eco function is the most economical because the biggest cost with washing machines is heating the water.

The eco function takes longer because it relies on a combination of soaking and agitation rather than heat in order to get clothes clean.
