Enjoying all the holiday threads on here at the moment so thought I'd prepare for mine next week Grin

So, if you're in an Austrian or Italian supermarket what are you buying?

Chestnut flour

ChaToilLeam · 20/07/2022 22:28

I live not too far away from Salzburg so if I go there I pack a cool bag and bring back tons of chilled Schlutzkrapfen and frozen Marillenknödel. 😋Also Marillenschnaps, Mozartkügeln, Manner wafers…

ChaToilLeam · 20/07/2022 22:28

Grüne Veltliner wine too 🍷

PlanetNormal · 20/07/2022 22:30

Sachertorte from Austria.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 20/07/2022 22:30

Big hunks of Parmesan to bring home and freeze

Holidayy · 20/07/2022 22:33

Lots to Google there!

Ciobar hot chocolate sachets
Paneangeli vanilla baking powder
Siroppo (posh Italian squash in glass bottles, also nice in cold milk)
Foccacia

MarmiteCoriander · 20/07/2022 22:49

Italy- Dried or fresh porcini muschrooms. The dried ones last a long time.

  • Amaro. A lovely liquor, digestivo perfect for after a meal

Austria- I once bought a bottle of stroh in a ski resort. Whatever it actually is, its strong! It helped me ski much better! Years later though, I still have 80% of the bottle left and not sure when I've ever drink it again.

Liebelei · 20/07/2022 23:18

Knusperli Knuspermüsli - the white chocolate and strawberry flavour, the chocolate and raspberry and the chocolate and cherry.

User1435 · 20/07/2022 23:25

Pumpkin seed oil for salad dressing!

AmbushedByCake1 · 20/07/2022 23:28

Oooooh.

Italian supermarket; espresso in your pocket (like a chocolate coffee shot), amaro cherries, smoked scamorza, dried porcini, balsamic vinegar (always loads better quality than what we get over here).

Holidayy · 20/07/2022 23:33

Scamorza added to the list!

I bought a metal jug for my milk steamer - a few euros and much better shape than the fancy ones here

Galliano · 20/07/2022 23:47

Marvis toothpaste
possibly more flavours of san pellegrino pop
premixed aperol

WorkEventing · 20/07/2022 23:50

Pumpkin seed oil (Kürbiskernöl) also for vanilla ice cream.
Hay milk cheese (Heumilchkäse)
Mini Dickmanns (but just for the name, they aren’t that nice)
Zotter chocolate especially the weird flavours – I think there’s one with cheese and one with dripping, for example
Weizenbier
Börek and/or gözleme if there are Turkish shops
Medicinal tea if you are in a pharmacy

Pocket Coffee but it’s not sold in the summer.

WorkEventing · 20/07/2022 23:51

Stroh is rum.

Sgtmajormummy · 20/07/2022 23:53

Creamy milk chocolate by NOVI.
Salted capers and anything pickled in a jar from PONTI, especially Cipolle Borettane.

Supermarkets are starting to stock up for the new school year so:
Extra wide felt tip pens by GIOTTO
Cool themed school diary for teenagers

Summer clothing sales are on and you can get 70% off in some shops like Tezenis (quality cotton pj’s and underwear)
Cotton and Silk (menswear)
Original Marines(childrens’ clothes)

Nesti Dante soap from OVS

WorkEventing · 20/07/2022 23:53

Zirbenschnapps, although it would have to be a fancy supermarket to stock it. Nut schnapps otherwise.

Sgtmajormummy · 20/07/2022 23:53

Forgot to say: Italy!

MarmiteCoriander · 20/07/2022 23:56

WorkEventing · 20/07/2022 23:51

Stroh is rum.

Thank you. TBH- I only googled it tonight for the 1st time. For some reason, I had always thought it was a strong digestivo or moonshine type liquor! Never had any clue it was a rum!!! I might have to dust the bottle off and look up recipes with ice now! thanks.

Agree with previous suggestions and would add the following:

Austria:

pumpkin seed oil (nutty taste, lovely in salad dressings, drizzled on pumpkin soup or vanilla ice cream)

Blauer Zweigelt

Tiroler Speck

Sausages: Käsekrainer, Debreziner, Polnische, Blutwurst (Blunzn)

Bergkäse (mature)

Topfen (40 or 20% fat; this is the Austrian word for quark; IME it‘s impossible to get decent quark in the UK but it‘s delicious savoury or sweet if you can buy the good stuff)

Italy:

Spicy dried salsiccia

Pane carasau (crispy Sardinian bread, longlife and delicious with a bit of salt and olive oil)

Pecorino Sardo

Ham and salami

Pasta (types you can‘t get at home, i.e. fregola)

Orange blossom honey

Rio Mare Tonno per Pasta (great for very quick and tasty weeknight meals)

WhiteHydrangeas · 21/07/2022 00:08

Haselnuss Schnaps is also really nice (don‘t buy the cheap stuff though)
