Climate change - what is doomism and what is actually realistic?

Disclaimer: PLEASE no climate change denialism because I really think with things as they are (please for the love of god don't mention 1976) you have to be delusional to try to argue that it's not real or that it's over hyped.

What I want to know from more knowledgeable, scientifically inclined posters is - what is doomism and what is realistic? I have seen a range of opinions ranging from humans will be extinct in a decade to we in the UK won't see any crazy changes that are likely to mean the end of life as we know it in the next 100 years. Are we somewhere in between that? What can I, in a practical sense, do - beyond all the obvious environmental changes - to keep myself and my loved ones safe? Obviously there are scientific papers in abundance all over the internet but I'm too thick to be able to actually decipher them and am relying on opinion pieces which all seem to interpret everything differently.

Thoughts (but please no one saying climate change is just media hysteria) gratefully received.
