How easy is it to switch to driving an automatic car?

I’m looking for a new car and I like the fuel efficiency of the hybrid Toyota Yaris Cross but it’s automatic.

I’ve never driven an automatic, is it easy to get used to?

Bloody love mine. My car-mad partner used to joke about my auto, then he brought one and loved it too.

Communionmom · 19/07/2022 11:32

Just to clarify - I’ve always driven manual, not that I’ve never driven.

Like driving a toy car it’s so easy honestly

Just put your left foot out the way and your right foot does everything else

Schmz · 19/07/2022 11:33

My DP has an automatic and I CANT drive the bloody thing
i’m not stupid
been driving for years
but can’t get used to the automatic
its so annoying !!!!!

SevenSteps · 19/07/2022 11:34

Yes, I was dreading it tbh. However in practice I spent two days max feeling for the clutch and after that didn't really think about it.

Sprig1 · 19/07/2022 11:34

Extremely easy.

Beamur · 19/07/2022 11:34

Really easy.
I have to adjust when I switch to a manual more! Otherwise I stall it 😁😁

UrsulaPandress · 19/07/2022 11:34

Easy peasy.

RatherBeRiding · 19/07/2022 11:35

Very very easy. Just plant your left foot and do not ever move it. You will be amazed how quickly you adapt!

Holshicup · 19/07/2022 11:35

Yes really easy! I had a company car that was auto years ago and would never go back to manual.
It helped me to take my left shoe off to remind me not to use that foot!
Only took a few days to get out of the habit.

mrsjackrussell · 19/07/2022 11:36

Really easy. Just keep your left foot out of the way as you might be tempted to use it. Love mine.

I've only ever had automatic cars for over 40 years. Even passed my test in one, I don't know why people have manual cars.

LimesandClementines · 19/07/2022 11:36

A couple of days max for me, we switched to a Toyota hybrid and it was weird the first couple of times but I wouldn't want to go back to manual now!

TrashPandas · 19/07/2022 11:36

Really easy. And it's also pretty easy to go back to driving a manual afterwards.

queenie2016 · 19/07/2022 11:36

You get used to it pretty quick it's hard going back to driving a manual more than going manual to auto

HippeePrincess · 19/07/2022 11:37

I find it extremely easy but I’m one of those who can drive any vehicle with no problem, I can switch back and forth with no issue but I know some people really struggle with this.

imsureineverdo · 19/07/2022 11:37

Took me about 2 days, it's so easy, just pretend you don't have a left foot! It was much harder going back to a manual and I've driven those for 25 years!

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 11:39

Mega easy. The only issue is that you’ll never want to drive a manual again. It’s 12 years since I’ve driven one and I don’t think I could any more.

LadyCatStark · 19/07/2022 11:40

Sooo easy 🥰.

msbevvy · 19/07/2022 11:41

Very easy. It feels like driving a dodgem car.

Manual cars will soon become a thing of the past as people switch to electric cars which are, as far as I know, all automatic.

TallulahBetty · 19/07/2022 11:42

Give it a few days and you'll be fine.

They are VERY boring to drive though. Half the fun of driving is changing gear.

MadMadMadamMim · 19/07/2022 11:42

Very easy. You just sit and steer.

However, I didn't realise until DS asked me "When you brake, why do you take your left hand off the wheel, hover it about and put it back on the steering wheel again?" was that my brain is obviously used to driving a manual for many years.

Clearly on autopilot I touch the brakes, automatically go to change gear, remember it's an automatic and put hand back on wheel. 😀

Nor necessarily true - I was desperate to go back to a manual

Communionmom · 19/07/2022 11:46

Thats encouraging!

Driving a manual is slightly more fun, but whenever I buy a car (used) there are always far more autos available. It's definitely not worth £££ extra for a gear stick, at least for me.
