How to scan and preserve really old family photos

I've got the job of preserving the family photos including my Mum and Dad's wedding album.

I don't think my ink jet printer/scanner is going to cut it!

Has anyone done this? I'd like to keep the quality of the photos but not spend too much time and money on it.

I've thought about using some kind of service but just can't risk losing any photos.

If you don't want to spend too much time or money, have you thought about simply taking a photograph of each photo with your smartphone or camera, then cropping it if you get any of the surrounding album etc. in? Not amazing quality, but I did this and they're perfectly acceptable images.

DH did this with a lot of photos but I can't remember what the name of the site he used was. Posting here so that I remember to ask him and reply later!
