People who wear masks, do you get hassle for it?

I live abroad & am visiting UK family in August. I’m interested to know if people (& kids) who continue to mask in UK (or who’ve restarted) are experiencing any hassle/judgement/negativity for doing so?

Where I live, we have only recently made masks voluntary & many people still wear them for shopping, public transport. Masks are mandated in healthcare settings. As the UK is currently experiencing a lot of COVID cases, and as we are staying with frail elderly relatives we absolutely want to continue wearing our masks when out and about. We wear comfortable N95 or KN95/94; we are used to it, including DS (11). We are all vaccinated and adults are boosted; none of us have had COVID.

thanks

I wear a mask round SE England.
I've a couple of times had someone ask me to take it off as they have hearing difficulties, but other than that nothing even remotely negative.

I've not had covid either, and hope that continues.

RobinHumphries · 18/07/2022 13:31

Nope, not had any hassle or negativity.

Nope

I’ve worn one when I had a cold, because it felt like the responsible thing to do. I was pretty sure it was a cold but why not do all I could to avoid passing it on to someone who might be really anxious about the symptoms. No one commented or even seemed to notice much. There’s always a handful of people wearing them when I go to the supermarket, or a museum, cafe etc.

Never stopped wearing mine and not had any bother at all

Muffster · 18/07/2022 14:01

Thank you that’s reassuring for the most part, I’ve had friends get jeered or shouted at or nasty looks when in the USA. I’m glad to hear anecdotes that people in the UK are of the live and let live/you do you persuasion.
@Dorisnotreally I’m sorry that happened to you. It sounds very unsettling and distressing. I’m not sure why mentioning the group of young people were black is relevant though.

And what exactly does their race have to do with that? We don't need to know what they look like to know they were rude to you.

borntobequiet · 18/07/2022 14:02

No.

PeekAtYou · 18/07/2022 14:06

I see people with masks at the supermarket and haven't seen them getting hassled. I haven't seen them in other shops though.

I don't wear a mask but I try to social distance from strangers

I still wear a mask.

Partly for Covid but mainly to avoid chickenpox or measles. As I am immune supressed and exposure to those illnesses can be dangerous for me.

I have not had any negativity about it. However that might be in part due to the fact I am in a wheelchair and therefore clearly am more vulnerable than others.

DappledThings · 18/07/2022 14:38

I had to wear one on the train last week because I tested positive in the office so had to go home. Felt like a bit of a prat but nobody actually looked twice or said anything.

daisyjgrey · 18/07/2022 14:52

@Carrieonmywaywardsun I've reported the comment. Their race had no bearing on the anecdote, hopefully it'll be removed soon.

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/07/2022 14:52

I continue to wear a mask in crowded places, in shops and supermarkets and will carry on indefinitely. I don’t care if people mock. It’s their choice not to bother, but my choice to keep wearing a mask. I’ve noticed an increase in mask wearing in some supermarkets too.

finished31 · 18/07/2022 15:00

I'm still semi-shielding (solid organ transplant) and only go out at quieter times with a mask on always.

To answer your question;
I do get a few glances but what annoys me more is people stand far to close even when they see I'm wearing a mask.

knackersToIt · 18/07/2022 15:01

@Dorisnotreally your post is racist, as is your subsequent "explanation ". If you don't understand why, then you need to work on yourself and do better.

StinkyWizzleteets · 18/07/2022 15:05

I still wear mine in Scotland. Nobody here said anything to me. We went down south to visit a relative (lake district) and I got a lot of strange and angry looks but only one man took exception and shouted at me. I can’t remember what it was he said but he was very angry and his wife was trying to pull him away.

jaundicedoutlook · 18/07/2022 15:05

I always wear one on trains and in supermarkets or shopping centres (south east) and have never been hassled. Currently in Japan for a couple of weeks and everyone wears one everywhere indoors.

Rampant libertarians in England, where mask wearing has dropped to very low levels, are just wankers and frankly need to have a good hard think about themselves.

Tabbouleh · 18/07/2022 15:07

I wear one in London and no one has given me any trouble.

SirenSays · 18/07/2022 15:13

Most hassle I get about it is from taxi drivers.

Craver · 18/07/2022 15:17

I always wear a mask inside shops and have never had anyone look at me funny, say anything or appear annoyed in any way.

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/07/2022 15:18

I’ve had friends get jeered or shouted at or nasty looks when in the USA.

I am in a politically conservative part of the US; I still wear a mask indoors and have never had a comment or even a harsh look. Quite a few others are wearing masks again as we are having a surge of the Omicron variants at present.

StopStartStop · 18/07/2022 15:19

Dirty looks. Not real hassle. I'm keeping my masks as long as I can. Maybe forever.

ZarquonsSandals · 18/07/2022 15:22

No, had no agro.
I work 1 day a week and wear a mask in the workplace. Wear one on the bus/train in shops etc.
