DH's ferret just bit me.

They live in the garage. I went to put them in their cage and bring it out into a breezy patch of shade because they don't like heat. I reached in to pick one up and she sank her teeth into my forearm and wouldn't let go. When I prised her mouth open with my other hand, she just moved and bit me again. It was really hard to break her grip. I dropped her and left the garage, and she jumped out of the box she was in and chased me. I just got the door closed in time.

I know they're probably grumpy with the heat but it really hurt, she drew blood in 4 different places and it's bruising already. Plus they're still in the garage, when they'd be a lot more comfortable outside, but I'm afraid to go back in there now.

According to google they don't seem to be like cats, where you need antibiotics if you break the skin, but it hurts and I'm feeling a little hard done by. And there's no-one here for me to moan at. It's terrible!

<unmumsnetty hug> for you.
I have a festering insect bite on my leg, can I join you in misery corner?

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 18/07/2022 12:24

Does he keep working ferrets? They're vicious little bastards, you poor thing!

TheDuck2018 · 18/07/2022 12:26

Love ferrets, they're characterful little critters, but yeah they do bloody hurt when they bite!

It sounds like you’re confident you don’t need antibiotics, so if that’s the case just watch out for an infection in the coming days. I know nothing about ferrets but in my mind, animal bites = potential infection.

AnonymousHippopotamus · 18/07/2022 12:28

Aww poor you 🥺

I've been told they don't like you grabbing them from behind as they think you may be a bird of prey or other predator trying to grab them. Your DH needs to do something really nice to make up for this!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 18/07/2022 12:31

Everyone with ouchies is more than welcome, festering or otherwise.

They're not working ferrets, they're spoiled little bollixes who contribute nothing but pain and stench to our lives pets. He thinks they're fine because they don't bite him. He lets them lick his eyelids. I can usually handle them safely enough (this is only the second time I've had to pry one off myself).

I didn't sneak up on them, they were watching me coming and know me well. I reckon it's just the heat making them cranky, which makes it all the more unfortunate that I'm afraid to move them!

I'm not necessarily confident about antibiotics, I just googled, but I'll definitely keep an eye on it (and use it to guilt DH into extra niceness!).

I feel your pain. You were trying to help them

Can I join in feeling miserable? Fell off my new electric bike Saturday, only had the bloody bike for about an hour.!

Was loving it but then downhill I crashed, scraped arm and have some lovely bruises on my legs.

Bike is fine, been serviced. Me had confidence knocked

Would a story about how my grandad was out rabbitting with his ferrets, grabbed her as she flushed them out and as he'd been waiting with the net etc was desperate for a wee and made the mistake of unzipping while holding a ferret cheer you up a little?
My dads cousin who told me this said he was too busy laughing to help as grandad was spinning around with blood and wee going everywhere and the ferret locked her jaw so stayed attached

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 18/07/2022 12:42

I take your ferret and raise you a 6 foot iguana op.
Buggar bit my arm and stupid me didn't seek medical help.. Ring your GP op. Better to check.
*iguana now lives with a specialist.

Gingernaut · 18/07/2022 12:48

You have my sympathy OP.

CMOTDibbler · 18/07/2022 13:52

@Gingernaut they don't sit at tiny desks, working ferrets go down rabbit holes to flush out rabbits

Tiny desks 😁😁😂😂 A schoolfriend's dad used to keep working ferrets, they certainly weren't bred for cuddles! My friend HATED them.

MiddleParking · 18/07/2022 14:07

Working ferret my arse. What are they, paying taxes? I’d send them and my husband away from my house with their collective tails between their legs.
