What are the benefits of checking in online?

I've never been a frequent flyer and it feels like forever since I've been anywhere. I feel clueless!

I know for some of the budget airlines there's a charge to check in at the airport, but that doesn't apply to my flights, so what is the benefit of checking in online?

I already have seats booked. I'll only be taking hand luggage.

My airline's website says if you check in online you must print the boarding cards, but I don't have a printer. I'm wondering if it matters?

If you don't have a printer just do it at the airport although can you do it to your phone?

If you check in online you therefore don’t have to check in person (waiting in a line).

if they don’t do electronic boarding passed and you can’t print it off then you’ll have to check in person.

Thank you. I've just realised that. I think in the past I've always had to queue regardless, but that would be to check in suitcases at the same desk? If travelling with only cabin baggage, you don't need to report to anyone before going through to departures? Is that right?

If you don't have hold luggage then checking in online means you don't need to queue to check in at the airport. Are you sure the boarding passes don't get sent to your phone too? We had ours on our phone for our holiday to Lanzarote

Yes, that's right - you print off the boarding pass or have it on your phone and can go straight through if you've only got handluggage. It saves so much time...

We had ours to a phone it meant we just went to the baggage drop off .

Some airlines overbook so not checking in might make you more likely to be refused boarding and put on another flight.

I had that once with KLM. I booked at short notice, tried to check in online, it wouldn't let me and when I got to the airport, they said the flight was full, but in my case it worked out OK because I was on an indirect flight and they put me on a direct flight with another airline so actually got there quicker than planned - I wasn't on this flight from the outset because the tickets were far more expensive than the one I was booked on.

But that might not be the case, and it could be that you can get your boarding pass fairly easily from a machine at the airport. Just look for desks and kiosks before you go through security, as you normally have to scan a boarding pass to enter the secure area anyway. Although I'm sure mobile passes will be OK?

I bought wee luggage scales so we could keep our suitcases within their limits

I think OP is asking how many items of clothing, shoes, etc you can fit into the 10kg limit

Yes, but I packed the same bag for a weekend away this week and it felt pretty heavy, but not actually heavy enough to register on my bathroom scales.

I'm wondering if an ordinarily packed bag, that meets the dimensions, would be within 10kg, or whether I need to be careful re weight as well as size iyswim

@50mg We're currently in Spain for the month (me, OH & DD15) and travelled with just hand luggage cases. OH & I are well used to it so cases aren't over packed & weighed about 6-7kg each. Teen DD is...a teen so has packed a different outfit for every day (just about) & had to sit on their case to get it shut - still weighed less than 10kg. Unless you're taking lots of heavy items/shoes you should be ok. We stuck them on the scales at home to certain bit although they all felt 'heavy' they were all less than 10kg.
The bigger issue with travelling hand luggage only can be toiletries/liquids but we did a Boots click & collect for the specific brand of sun cream needed for DDs sensitive skin & have bought lost other stuff out here 😎
