Going for a week mid August. It's 20 years since we last visited a Greek Island so just wondering what to expect of Sissi on Crete.
Particularly wondering....
Is it clean?
Can u put loo roll down toilets or is it still yucky bins?
Is the food OK? Back in the day there was always warnings about not eating salads etc...im vegetarian!
DH loves seafood....any good restaurants, any we should avoid?
Is it going to be baking hot...is it a breezy island?
Anything else I need to know?
Thanks 🙂

1 - yes generally but there will probably be bin areas that are just that but otherwise generally pretty clean
2 - still bins. Can’t see that ever changing but you get used to it pretty quickly and it isn’t dirty, just not what you are used to
3 - no problems with the food, ice or tap water
4 - walk around and see where’s busy or where the locals go. Ask others at your hotel
5 - it will be hot. Crete isn’t a particularly windy island but it does happen

Watch for the free raki after your meals! Nothing wrong with it at all and it’s the Greek way but too many of those will put you on your arse in the morning 🥴
Heraklion airport arrivals is small and hot so be prepared to roast while you’re waiting for your bags. Departures is recently done so is much better

Enjoy 🇬🇷 Crete is my favourite place in the world 😍

Lovely wee place - not a lively party resort. We went there 4 years ago to recharge after some family bereavements. It was perfect for that.

You’ll be spoiled for food. Neromilos is perfect - in fact I’d consider a return visit just to go back. We enjoyed it that much we went back the next night. Ormus and Menios were also very good. Everywhere we went people were friendly.

I think there were bins rather than UK standard loos but everywhere was very clean. We stayed at the Castello Boutique which was lovely.

Yes - a lot of Raki offered! But in a small measure so easy to just let it sit - if you empty the glass someone will refill it!

Also a fabulous fish restaurant overlooking the harbour - sorry - can’t remember the name of it. I’ve had a look on Tripadvisor but can’t identify which one.

Yesss!!!

We bought a holiday to Sisi off Teletext! There was an amazing restaurant next to the hotel that served incredible moussaka.

We ditched the hotel and drove round the island, staying in non-tourist places by the sea. There’s the beach where they shot the Bounty advert near Sisi. It was a fabulous trip. Enjoy it!

I would also go back for Neromilos and the lovely woman who runs it @OllyBJolly Such happy and delicious memories.

We loved it and @OllyBJolly @Veetavix also went to Neromilos several times during our 10 days! Nikki is the owner - hope they are still going strong post COVID.

It’s a lovely village however we went in July and it was too hot for me. They were using planes to dispense water for forest fires that week. The hotel we stayed in (Angela Suites) was nice but no sea views so I wouldn’t return. Def try The Happy Train and a trip to Spinalonga/ Agios Nikolaos.

Sissi is wonderful, I have family who live near there so visit twice a year.

Agree with all the comments. I would recommend hiring a car if you can and visiting other nearby places, like Milatos, Neapoli, Agios Nikalos, Old Chersonissos (the regular Chersonissos is good for shopping and nice in parts but bonkers busy).
