Are you doing anything specific to prepare for the heat next week?

I was chatting to friends and a few were prepping for this. Ideas they came up with:
Checking the car so less chance of breaking down
Several bottles of water in the car and snacks
Reflective blanket for windscreen when parked at work
Buying extra water in case supply temporarily shut off
Filling the baths with water for repeated quick dips
Opening the loft hatch
Putting parasol in front of patio doors to give more shade to a room
Planning 'no-cook' meals for a few days
Ice blocks to put in front of fans
Frozen water bottles to take to school

All I could add was that I had made sure my ice cube trays were full in the freezer and I had a stock of ice pops frozen and some lollies to pop round to an older neighbour with as a good excuse to check on her.

I have good system for which windows and curtains to open and close throughout the day when I am at home but am working full days so will be out 7.00am - 6.30pm, so not really much use as they will all be closed).

I am trying to get my house as cold as possible now as it really holds on to heat or cool once its got it, so we can enter the heatwave without stored heat in the house and hopefully it will take longer to turn into an oven.

Is anyone else making specific plans to ease the days next week?

I’m going to roast a chicken tomorrow so I have some cold meat I can chuck into salads. Probably will also make a quiche to have cold with a green salad one night. I won’t be cooking, that’s for sure!

I’m also making sure all our lightweight pale clothing is washed and ready to go.

Why opening the loft hatch? Our loft is boiling at the moment...

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 16/07/2022 12:34

My mum has advised me to put foil on my windows. Will that actually do anything or am I just going to look like the street's nutter?

Not sure! I'm sure I read somewhere about the rising hot air going into the loft instead of being trapped in the bedrooms, but if its already roasting up there it doesn't seem an effective solution.

😂- thinking back a few years I saw a top floor window like this when I was walking the dog in cooler weather and wondered what was going on!

I bought extra water bottles that I’ll freeze for all of us to take to school/work. I’ll leave my windows slightly open in the work car park. My children will be getting a cab home from school with the child minder instead of walking 40 minutes. That’s it, it’s two days.

14Degrees · 16/07/2022 12:48

I am making sure we have water lying around for wildlife.

Keeping curtains shut during the day.

Keeping door to conservatory shut while making sure cats are not in there (after a slightly scary experience yesterday where we did not notice one cat had snuck in and was being quickly cooked - she's fine).

Yes, aluminium foil works as an insulator so that will work. Idea is to keep heat out of the house during the day. Just like keeping cold out during the winter.

ThreeRingCircus · 16/07/2022 12:55

Nothing major but keeping curtains and windows closed during the day.

I've stocked up on ice lollies and food that can just be grabbed from the fridge with no cooking required.

DD1 will be at school (unless they close early) so will be sending her in with ice in her water bottle and hat/suncream as usual. DD2 I'm planning on keeping indoors most of the day and occupying her by letting her play in the bath then have a quiet day with TV. Will take both children out into the garden later on in the day as we get plenty of shade after about 3pm.

DH wants to cover both car windscreens to make sure the cars don't bake.

I don't wish to specify exactly what

However, this week my employer & I have been directly involved with adding extra heat related protection for their end user customers. So far this week we have managed all temperature related issues adequately.

Let's hope we cope with the next part of the heat wave - fingers crossed.

Huge army of people running around in the background, plus support teams...

LeavesOnTrees · 16/07/2022 13:11

You should open your loft hatch at night to get the house as cool as possible.

I'll be freezing bottles of water. Leaving the windows open at night then in the morning closing everything up, including curtains.

RockandRollsuicide · 16/07/2022 13:32

Isnt foil a fire hazard?
What about car covers?

LargeBadSwanCollider · 16/07/2022 13:40

I just pitched the tent in the garden to sleep in as my bedroom is in a loft conversion and its quite unpleasant to sleep in when it gets hot (understatement).
apart from that nothing really.

oh I’ve got my three pairs of ‘goodness it’s quite hot today’ pants ready to wear next week.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 16/07/2022 14:01

I’ve bought some cooling blankets and those neck towels. We can wear what we like to school so the holiday dresses are out. Got some little spray bottles to fill with cologne and tissues soaked in it too and folded up in zip lock bags. Just off to get some cold stuff for meals. Walking dogs at arse o clock for next few days. My dog is fine but we’ve got my sons dog and she’s a poo machine so likes several short walks a day.

GCHeretic · 16/07/2022 14:02

We’ve bought some extra ice creams, got a big bag of ice for my husband’s bucket of beers and I’ve told my team at work to plan to work from home in case of melted railways / power cuts.

I might wear some kind of hat if I go out.

Ohmydayssilleople · 16/07/2022 14:03

My friend is making frozen vegetable lollies for the donkey sanctuary that she volunteers at 😍

MarshaMelrose · 16/07/2022 14:05

I've had the air conditioning in the car gassed up. Who knew you had to do that? But I'd booked it in for that before the heatwave prediction. It's forecast for 32° max round me, so I'm sure we'll survive 2 days!!

It reminds me of work when one snowflake falls and people are saying they have to leave so they don't get snowed in.

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2022 14:06

Those who are freezing bottles to bring to school - please also pack a normal water bottle that the kids can drink immediately.

Fed up of seeing thirsty kids trying to squeeze a drip of water out of a frozen bottle.

Aw, how lovely. I'd heard they liked them.

I'm a dog walker so work is cancelled.

Diarrhoea issues? 🤔

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2022 14:10

Read this article about how to spot drowning - one of the extreme heat risks is increased deaths by drowning as people seek to get out of the heat in water.

Yep 2 days in the garden. I'll keep my living room blinds closed to keep the room cool for DCat but other then that I'm making the most of it

Love the pic 👏😊

Well my plan was to get as much work done as I could this weekend so I didn’t have to exert myself much next week, but that doesn’t look like it is happening!
