Any 999/101 operators here? Does this mean bad something bad has happened?

This afternoon a friend from Canada called me. They haven’t been able to get in touch with their brother for over a week and asked if I could call the British police to perform a welfare check as he lives alone.

I called the non-urgent number about two hours ago and they said they would send someone over to his address. I just called back to ask if there had been any update. The person on the phone was jolly enough when they asked for my reference number but was suddenly sheepish and sounded unsure what to say before they told me they would get someone to contact me as soon as they can.

I’m really concerned that this sounds like bad news or am I reading too much into it? I gave them my friends contact details and he hasn’t heard anything either.

Thanks

I don't think that person would have access to any new information, though, would they?

JuliTooley · 15/07/2022 16:03

I’m not sure. I’m just worried about how dramatically his tone of voice changed. He said he couldn’t give me a time schedule as to when someone would call me back but that it would be as soon as possible.

@HollowTalk yes they would if the log had been updated.

@JuliTooley it doesn't indicate anything specific tbh - it could just be no one has been yet or that the officers attending want to ask a question, or even that he's fine but doesn't want people to know / he's not speaking to his sister for some reason. Too many variables.

@RedCarsGoFaster Thanks for your input. That has reassured me a bit. They are reasonably close but obviously live very far apart so don’t see eachother much. I have met him a number of times and can’t see a reason as to why he wouldn’t want his brother to know he is okay.

It really could mean anything, even that they've seen what the report is about and decided to use a more sensitive tone. Hope everything's ok x

@marmalade32 Ah okay. Hopefully I didn’t give that impression but I can understand that reasoning. Thanks

Sorry yes this does sound the typical fob you off until someone can speak to you or get details of the brother in Canada. Many a time I had to act as though nothing was important until the relative was safely in a private room.
