The strange case of Melissa Caddick

Hello

I know how much MN likes a conspiracy/mystery.

Anyone heard about this case? It was covered on my new favourite youtube channel - 60 minutes. Melissa cons her family and friends out of hundreds of thousands and then disappears. Her foot is then found washed up on a beach...is she dead or did she just cut her foot off and fake her own death?!

There was a dismembered foot washed up on a North Wales beach a few years ago, followed by (a bit later) two bodies. The foot belonged to one of the bodies. I hadn't thought of the foot being encased in a trainer. I couldn't work out why the foot was separate to the bodies.

Just read about her, crikey she was a piece of work!

I have no doubt she killed herself, so a coward as well as thief, and fraudster.

I'm halfway through the podcast but what's with Aussies starting sentences with "Look..." ? It sounds sort of aggressive!

@ChinBristles Yes that is an Aussie way of talking, it's a way of engaging your listener in a conversation when you're about to make a point. You'd also hear "Listen.." used in the same way a fair bit. Maybe they also say "listen" in the U.K., not sure.

Gremlinsateit · 17/07/2022 07:45

I’ve been so uncomfortable with the breathless coverage of this case locally. Given where she lived and the discovery of her body part, it’s quite obvious she must be dead, and her poor son has to cope with all the references to her partial remains.

Makes a change from people starting an answer with ‘So’ which seems to be prevalent in interviews these days! 😄

I immediately thought of this too.

Was the foot in this case in a shoe?

Yes Melissa Caddick’s foot was in a shoe. There’s photos of it online.

I listened to this podcast again and although it was excellent, the "look" thing annoyed me too.

What I took from it - how on earth did she think she was going to get away with it, long term? Her second husband is a piece of work. There was a long section about why feet get detached from dead bodies and end up washed ashore which was a bit grim, but interesting. I think it's definitely her.

Oooooo you want to be freaked out? Feet are common. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-severed-foot-1.5903703#:~:text=CBC%20News%20Loaded-,More%20than%20a%20dozen%20feet%20in%20shoes%20have%20washed%20up,12%20feet%20inside%20of%20them.

Spoiler alert: when someone kills themselves in the sea and they are wearing trainers, biology happens but not to the encased foot. It eventually floats up and is found.

That was my immediate thought when I read the op. Sadly MC is most likely dead and there really isn't much of a mystery.

icebearforpresident · 17/07/2022 09:23

I found the podcast by complete accident and loved it (although the hosts were a bit ‘chit-chatty’ with their tone, I agree).

part of me thinks she actually did have her foot cut off and is still alive - wasn’t there something in the podcast about how the trainer wasn’t how you would expect to find it after all that time in the water? Realistically she’s dead I know although I’d love it if her victims got some justice (hopefully in person while she’s standing on one foot)

ChinBristles · 17/07/2022 10:21

Yeah, I reckon she just lived the high life as long as she could get away with it and always planned to jump off the Gap if and when she got found out.

I think she's dead, although how that happened is unclear. I listened to a bit of the podcast but, as with many podcasts covering a single case over many episodes, it was so full of padding it got dull fast.

missdemeanors · 17/07/2022 11:33

Wow, well this sent me down a rabbit hole too, reading all about her.
What a nasty piece of work.
I think it's highly likely she's dead, but if not, I guess there's some justice in thinking her life is now in hiding and having to live with an amputated foot

DaniRabbity · 17/07/2022 13:36

Her foot was still inside a shoe. I just can't see somehow chopping off a foot or their own foot while it's still inside a shoe.

Bodies that go into water while wearing trainers, the feet often don't decompose.

I don't know about the state of the trainer but trainers are weirdly resistant to decomposition due to the materials they're made of. There's another case of a little boy who vanished while hiking and later found having been attacked by a cougar, and some people online insist on creating a mystery out of it by saying his shoes look too well-preserved to have been outside.

KnittingNeedles · 18/07/2022 10:44

They covered the foot thing in the podcast. I don’t remember all of the details but it was something about the anatomy of the foot making it likely that feet detach at the ankle - there was a spate of feet washed up on the west coast of the us after this happened. The buoyancy of modern running shoes with air pockets and foam makes them float.

I don’t buy the “she chopped her own foot off and Is living somewhere quietly” theory.

Snazzysausage · 18/07/2022 15:39

Funnily enough I listened to a podcast on this the other day. On Stitcher,it's this one. Very strange case.

Honestly your comment is hurtful to those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Maybe you mean it more specifically to her for not facing the music, but still you might appreciate being made aware of how hurtful this can be.

Hardly sad is it. A deserved ending for a woman who brought misery to her loved ones.
