Cardiff ideas

Going to Cardiff for 2 days in October and would love ideas of best things to see or do. Never been before. Staying fairly central so can walk in or drive. 2 adults one dog but can leave dog for a few hours. Bit if city and bit of nature would be cool.

I second St Fagans
Cardiff castle is worth a mooch
Cardiff Bay is nice for lunch
You can get a water taxi from outside the Millennium Stadium over the bay to Penarth Head
Bute Park is lovely
Shopping is great - St Davids 2 for brands and the arcades for more unusual places

In October the Sŵn Festival is on so quite a lot of (Welsh language) gigs on.

RaininSummer · 14/07/2022 20:41

Thank you both. Keep it coming if there are any more ideas.

The museum in the city centre is worth a visit. Bute Park next to the castle is a nice walk. As others have said, St fagans is also great and if you leave st fagans via the entrance near the big house there is a nice pub called the Plymouth Arms. We often go down the bay and walk across the barrage. A walk up the Garth mountain is nice and the Gwaelod y Garth Inn do good food. Castle Coch has walks around it. Have a great visit.

We stayed in Cardiff bay , walked from there into the centre and had a mooch round John Lewis ,

Bute Park lovely for a walk , also the arches are good ( Waterloo Tea shop good for a stop ) also Pettigrews

we had breakfast at The Ivy , then walked back to the Bay , then along , and all the way to Penarth
have a check what’s on at the Millenium centre , or the Arena ( maybe not if you have the dog with you though )

Roath Park is worth a look. Further afield is Garwnant near Merthyr Tydfil, lovely mountain walks in forestry.

RaininSummer · 15/07/2022 18:19

Thanks all. Great ideas. We will definitely do Bute park and the boat trip sounds cool. Also love the museum suggestion and the pubs and tearoom mentioned. So glad I asked. Me and oh have form for too much mindless wandering and I leave full of regret about places not seen.

Also liking the look of Roath park and will contemplate the longer mountain walk as an option. Feel I want more than 2 days now.

Definately the old arcades in the city centre, royal arcade, castle arcade etc. where you'll find the slightly more quirky independent shops (for a change from John Lewis etc)

Tour of the principality stadium

Cardiff castle do ghost tours in the autumn usually

National Trust - you could drive to Dyffryn Gardens, it's not in central Caddiff (obvs) but I think dogs are allowed on leads

Sorry I can't link but :
www.visitcardiff.com
lists places to go and what's on etc.

RaininSummer · 15/07/2022 20:37

Thanks for those ideas. Love the sound of the arcades. Also am a national trust member.

The Museum of Wales, which is just across the road from Bute Park, has some lovely paintings - some nice Impressionists and Turners, as well as more modern art and temporary exhibitions. Not a huge collection, but worth a look. It’s a beautiful building, too. Walk through the arcades in the centre of town, too - interesting, quirky independent shops and cafés.

Nomorefuckstogive · 15/07/2022 20:48

Either park near the museum, or walk in; that way, you avoid the one way system.

RaininSummer · 15/07/2022 20:51

Great advice re parking Ty. I have a grand list now.

Have a look if there are any good gigs in the students union.

train ride to Barry Island if the weather is good, ponty lido is another one that’s easy to get to on the train

Castell Coch and the sculptures trail through the woods.

GoodVibesHere · 15/07/2022 21:36

Ooh yes Barry Island and Nessa's slots

Surely you mean Barry's Island!! 🤣

Roath Park is lovely - beautiful park and lake and lots of great independent restaurants on Wellfield Road.

The arcades for the lovely little shops and cafes.

The museum is excellent.
