Pill for perimenopause?

Long time lurker, joined to ask for some major Mumsnet wisdom!

My periods have suddenly gone a bit crazy and given my age I think it's 99% likely it's because I'm peri menopausal. Has anyone taken the pill to try to regulate periods during peri, and if so, is it possible to cycle through periods to avoid them altogether? From what I've read I think I need a progesterone only pill? (I'm 48).

I took Microgynon for a few years in my twenties with zero side effects so I'm hoping I might tolerate the pill ok if I take it again....
