When will gingerism go away?

So im not ginger myself but why are gingers the only demographic which you can openly hate or make fun of and get away with it?

Because the other day At work I heard these women talking about babies and then one said "well what if your baby is ginger" in which she replied "well I wouldnt mind having a daughter who is ginger because they are pretty but ginger men are mingers" which they all laughed.

It seems like ginger men get more abuse or are considered ugly while ginger women are more sexually fetishized

My brother also has a good mate who is ginger but apparently he still gets people shouting names at him and even trying to fight him just because he is ginger.

I've never understood this hate for ginger people, its just a hair color in fact I think it can act like an amplifier and make someone look ever more attractive. Gingers also seem to age pretty well and apprently never go grey

Not true that they don't go grey . My in laws are all ginger, and they all have gone / are going grey

As a 12 year old ginger haired girl, it was awful. My mum switched energy company over it!

I haven't been bullied for my red hair as such but the obsession with pube colour was tiresome in my late teens / early 20s.

I think it has already stopped. A friend of mine has a grandson who has ginger hair. He is just the same as anyone with black, brown or blonde hair. He is in junior school.

I agree it’s bizarre. I’ve always assumed that it’s just a kind of widespread running joke, and that having red hair is such a benign trait that no one can really take it seriously.

I teach in Scotland, I hear quite a lot of negative comments (usually phrased as "jokes") despite there being a decent proportion of red-haired teens - I don't think it is racist given they are all Scottish, but I wonder if it is a chance to say something mean, since they know they can't say racist/homophobic stuff they way they might once have done.
I always pull up anyone who does this, and usually get a "he doesn't mind" and have to say that's not the point (and he might well mind, at heart!) I do think if they can, that laughing it off (or pretending too) is the best approach for a teenager - though it should not happen in the first place.
