Quick job application question - would appreciate help

Hi,

I am filling out a job application. One of the questions is: “Have you suffered at any time from clinical depression, mental illness, nervous breakdown/nervous debility, serious medical or psychological problems?“

I take sertraline for anxiety. Does this come under “serious medical or psychological problems”?

It’s not particularly bad anxiety and I wouldn’t describe it as serious. But I guess if it is so bad that I feel the need to take medication it might be classed as serious? It’s just a tick box yes or no, so no room to explain. No contact to speak to either.

What do you think?

What is the job? Is the question relevant?

If not, I would answer no. If I got the job, once I started I would then make the employer aware of any serious medical conditions.

If it is relevant, I may still answer no on the basis I didn't consider well-controlled anxiety as a serious medical issue. And again notify employer if I thought I needed to once I started the job.

That is extraordinarily intrusive...have they offered any justification as to why they are asking this? Or can you say what sort of job it is? At a push I would have said this would come within the remit of a pre-employment medical but even then.... And certainly not a job app!

If this is the 1st step of the application say no, and if you get further in the process you can bring it up
