Reception to Year One

Hello all,

My son is about to finish Reception. He is an end of August baby so still four. He has only really got into the rhythm of phonics and learning over the last few months so I want to keep the momentum going.

What kind of things would you recommend doing with him over the summer holidays? I'm just thinking ten or fifteen minutes a day but if he's up for it will do more.

Thanks!

What scheme do they use at school?

Alphablocks on CBeebies/iplayer is fantastic for this age. The programmes are only 10 minutes long and they're really cute and funny, as well as teaching phonics. I think there are books to go with the shows, too.

Reading Eggs is good, if you don’t mind the screen time.

There’s a very good (though expensive!) phonics card game called Blah Blah Blah.

And Five Minute Mum - books/website/Instagram - has oodles of game ideas for phonics. Perfect for what you’re looking to do.

Thanks so much, Blah Blah Blah is in the Amazon offers today for £12 so I've ordered!
