Is this a genuine Kanken backpack?

My 14yo has requested one of these bags:

www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken

as all her friends are getting one for next month going back to school. I told her absolutely no way at that price. She needs to shop around or check eBay for a good condition second hand one etc and come back to me if she can find something closer to the £30 mark.

She is adamant she wants a Kanken and found this but is worried it’s a fake and will be of rubbish quality?

I at first thought it was a mini version hence the price but it definitely says it’s the standard size one at 16 inches (the mini one is 7 inches).

Before we submit card details, can anyone tell me if there is anything obvious we’re missing here? Why is it so cheap? Is it second hand? In which case, why doesn’t it say so on the product details?

DD has had a real one since Y9 (now Y12). I have to say I really didn't want to buy it as apart from the silly price it's too small to fit everything in and and is desperately uncomfortable with stupid thin straps. But actually it has lasted much better than any other school bag she's had over the years, and is still going strong, if a bit faded. I tried to steer her towards cheaper/more sensible options but she really wanted it for all the usual teenage reasons (which I remember from my own experience at that age).

We got it for her as a part birthday present in the end given the extortionate cost, and it made her very happy indeed at the time.

I know it's still pricey but Cotswolds are currently doing 20% off.

Oh, I know the Kanken one isn't. It's a fashion brand. I just mean they are Danish and probably priced according to the market there. I don't think it translates well to UK school bag price expectations! Of course teenagers don't think about such things 😆

Ah OK, gotcha! I’m curious, can you link to the sort of thing continental Europeans are buying for €100?

WoolyMammoth55 · 10/07/2022 21:36

I've got a Kanken that was from their official website but a clearance item - it's a pretty vivid purple...

I think it was £40 or thereabouts in 2016.

It's been in the washing machine several times over the years, I still use it daily (hate handbags with a passion!) and it has done great service as a nappy bag for both my DCs in that time too.

It is SUPER comfortable, even when loaded up... and still going strong with, I'm sure, a decade more life left in it.

For the price per use, it's by far the best value bag I've ever bought - and I regularly get on-trend teens asking where I got it from, which as a non-trendy 42 yo, is very satisfying :)

My year 10 dd has had hers since year 7 - worth every penny! They last forever. I’d rather buy one expensive one than a new one every year.

Wallywobbles · 10/07/2022 21:58

They are bloody uncomfortable DSD got one off her mother. Used it for less than a week.

ManoMano is pretty big for DIY in France. I've never had a problem but they are resellers for lots of others. We have garden furniture, a sofa, fencing, tools all pretty good.

They are Swedish not danish.

Is Fjällräven a Swedish brand?
Hailing from the small town of Örnsköldsvik in Sweden, a place where mountains and forest meet the sea, Fjällräven is an outdoor clothing and equipment company that's committed to making nature more accessible.

Duttercup · 10/07/2022 22:06

It's a fashion brand.

Kanken is a popular bag (originally designed to be a lightweight but spacious school bag) but the manufacturer, Fjallraven, isn't a fashion brand. It's a really good outdoor brand. Their stuff is well made and extremely durable and, in my experience, deserves its high price point.

It's also Swedish for those struggling to recognise flags of the world.

Ashamedteeth · 10/07/2022 22:26

Asos sell them and you can often get 20% off codes

Yes, this.

I've got a genuine one and a fake. The fake has softer, comfier straps, to be honest, and is a bit roomier! I bought some padded covers for the straps of the genuine one, which make it much more comfortable to carry, and it's been going strong for years. I think I got the strap covers from Cotswold Outdoors.
