HI my son is 22 now diagnosed too late by nhs at 18 with autsim so most likely has other comorbidity due to getting zero help. Anyhoo here wwe are present day faceing challenges of alchoholism and depression to the point of him nearly attempting it but didn't as he said he saw me go through depression inthe lock down and because he said because he saw i didn't kill myself as I wanted to be around for him he thought he should do the same for me etc. So you can see this is no joke and sadly a very serious discussion and in need of help .We try medication and nhs doc and all we got there was yes he autisic here is some prozac..end result did not work as no drugs will cure autism and the prozac he didn't take properly due to his sleep is all over place he can be awake for days sometimes. I know if he has possible bipolar he should be forced to go docs and take meds I get that , but he display possibly only one of those four categories that would say you had it and that is even in the milder bi polar2. We already know he has OCD ..so it could be autism/ocd and straight up depression as he was sometimes a happy boy in the past, but we moved and he lost his friends from where we used to live and then pandemic hit so we became isolated etc and that natural shift into mkaing friends in a new enviromant was stopped and due to his autism and late diagnosis etc eveything now compounded into him being very depressed etc etc.

He has stated to me he wishes to try natural ways to help himself ie not drugs from doc. He also self medicates i suspect and/or is alchoholic at this point and he emotional blackmail me said if he didn't get his alchohol then he would kill himself most likely as the drink makes him feel better to the point where he doesn't want to do it or that life is bearable.

I have seen all this stuff about the cannabis oil on you tube and it is in the states is legal there they have proper docs etc that prescribe it etc etc but how we gonna do that or get that in this country? I know of one friend who is autistic and adult friend of mine who smokes a lot of it to medicate rather than drugs from doc and must say am astounded at how well they do in life compared to another friend who also autistic adult who went down the other road and takes meds from doc and was given that since younger and they also take illegal hardcore drugs and there life is a train wreck and they most likely will not survive past 55. This is why I am a bit anti drugs with some mental health issues if it can be avoided as the use of pill popping from a young age can result in that being the go to later in life and not always the prescribed ones from docs. I know this is not case with all but I have seen this in my own life first hand. I also Know cannabis oil used to get them of the alchoHol..I have a sneaking suspicion that if i go docs with him they just go to put him on mainstream drugs again and the fight to get cannabis will be like getting blood out of a stone..any help appreciated:)

Hi OP, sorry for what you are going through - it's obviously a lot.

I don't know what the right course of treatment would be but for full-spectrum oil and other products try Hemp in Avalon - a real physical shop on the High St in Glastonbury. They will advise about potentially helpful products over the phone and post them out to you. Google has the phone number and opening hours.

Best of luck. Flowers

Sorry to say that if he has bipolar 2 then cannabis in any form is probably not a good idea. It can precipitate psychosis in vulnerable individuals, especially young people.

I think cannabis products are only prescribed for certain illnesses like MS and some epilepsy syndromes.

I hope you find something to help him. It sounds tough.

Goawayangryman · 10/07/2022 09:58

If not bipolar 2 (as in never goes high, just unipolar depression) then .... I suppose anything is worth a try but cannabis isn't totally benign. It can worsen apathy, can make people anxious, paranoid, and psychotic if you're vulnerable. And obviously if you smoke it there are serious respiratory concerns.

Goawayangryman · 10/07/2022 10:00

Ah yes CBD oil is that what you mean?!? In which case yes a full spectrum high potency one might be worth trying. Needs to be Co2 extracted. Be aware though that positive data is from trials using much, much higher doses of CBD than you can buy commercially.

theemmadilemma · 10/07/2022 10:03

You need to research RSO. Rick Simpson Oil.

It might be a struggle to obtain over here, although if you found the right people perfectly possible.

Swashbuckled · 10/07/2022 10:07

Many independent vape shops sell CBD oil. Look into local ones and give them a ring, or message them, to check if they stock it before travelling there.

theemmadilemma · 10/07/2022 10:07

I'd start by looking on FB (private groups) for using RSO/weed for medical use.

My child is few years younger, diagnosed a few years younger but similar in age and diagnosis.

We did the drug route. citalopram then Prozac (fluoxetine), but after four years what we found helped was Sertraline.

It wasn't instant, I'd say it took 3-4 months being on a higher dose. It's a strange drug in that it doesn't dull the emotions or the senses like the others, but it somehow enables them to access life In all it's ugly, emotional, frustration. It's worked after years of going through every other drug.

Can you ask the GP to specifically give your son a chance with sertraline? You need to work up to a minimum of 150mg a day. Less didn't seem to work, so don't be fobbed off.

toooldtocarewhoknows · 10/07/2022 10:10

I should add that because of age we had access to an NHS paediatric psychiatrist, this was all sorted through them.

We are now under the GP as services evaporate after 18.

He needs to go back to the doctor, not try to precure illegal drugs which could make his mental state worse.

devonianBiatch · 10/07/2022 10:15

Op, I'm bipolar and my son has ASD and addictions. Over the years we have both tried all sorts of drugs therapies etc . About 15 -18 months ago I started reading up about psilocybin and its role in treating depression. There is a fascinating documentary on Netflix called fabulous fungi that you could watch to see if it appeals to you.

I now grow my own magic mushrooms at home. It IS illegal in that they are class A drugs but I they help me and my son hugely. I fully expect them to be decriminalised in the next few years as more and more academics are desperate to study them in therapeutic roles. Other members of my family also use them ( microdosing). The only ingredient is popcorn or millet, spores and water. That's it. So it's organic and as natural as you can get. No side effects other than some people report nausea if the sgrooms are harvested to close to maturity. But no hang over, no liver damage, no smoking etc. just a 2-5 hour experience that makes you feel super connected and euphoric.

Can I please just add and make some of you aware that I love my son very much and am a very responsible parent and would not give my son anything unless thoroughly researched and was thinking more along the lines of even trying to move country to the states where it is prescribed legally the right stuff by right doctor not just willy nilly. As I mentioned I do know personly of two different adults who were late diagnosed as adults and then one who smokes the weed is the one who is actualy having a decent life there flat is clean they eat properly don't abuse alchohol etc and for the most part are doing very well and the one who was given mainstream drugs by docs now has the life of a train wreck as they saw pills as being what you take to sort your life out and now takes ilegal hard core drugs etc. Ps I am with my son 24/7 as well and keep very close tabs on him due to his state currently and he has told me he will be honest with me about how he is feeling.

Honestly, try researching manic mushrooms.

Far too many people are quick to judge. I spent 6 years on a very high dose of mod stabilisers. They destroyed me. I've been left with long term cognitive impairment, destroyed sleep patterns and tardive dyskinesia. Psilocybin has revolutionised my life. I'm totally bipolar drug free for the vast majority of the time.

Goawayangryman · 10/07/2022 22:20

The microdosed psyilocybin evidence seems quite convincing from what I've seen. I would never want to take a large, trippy dose of magic mushrooms ever again.. my face went numb and I thought the dustbins in the pub car park were alive. However...

microdosing maybe. Lots of things have paradoxical effects at high doses. Alcohol for one and that is legal despite being dangerous in the short term, carcinogenic, and highly addictive.

Prescribed antidepressants another. Not obviously physically harmful, or at least not the more modern ones, but they decimate your sex drive and wrap you in emotional.cotton wool. For me this has been a.price worth paying but they certainly aren't without issues.

Good luck to you and your son. It sounds hard for you both.
