People who poke people to emphasise the point they are making, why?

My sister in law, husband and dad all do this and I hate it. We're having a conversation and they get to a particularly funny/sad/intense point and they'll prod me in the arm or the side as they talk.

Do you do this? Why?

I hate this. Also people that clap you on the back or slap your thigh when they say something funny. It's weird, I don't know why they do it. It's an invasion of personal space.

All the pokers are suspiciously quiet. I also noticed today that people who poke other people also sit/stand too close to you.

My DM does this. She stopped when I went ballistic at her for doing when I was driving. It was so distraction. She says she does to because she got into the habit of doing it to my dad (now dead) who was hard of hearing and it was a way of getting his attention if she wanted to tell him something. She has mostly stopped doing it now.

How have you not lost your shit?

I bet the silence from pokers is because they don't even realise they're doing it.

An elbow nudge sends me completely over the edge.

Paq · 13/07/2022 21:33

Ugh this is horrible. It's so invasive and sort of demanding. Like "oi, react to me on my terms".

Paq · 14/07/2022 06:27

Still waiting for a poker, prodder or nudger to show up and explain themselves...

Absolutely. And people who come up behind you (while you're washing up ) and jab both sides of your waist .

HauntingScream · 14/07/2022 06:32

Thank goodness I don't know anyone who does this.
I would go ballistic. I remember when I was on Facebook and people would poke me. That was bad enough let alone in real life. Ugh.
Next time they do it, ask them why because you don't like it.

dudsville · 14/07/2022 07:30

I don't think I've ever been poked i thought it only happened on tv.

ofwarren · 14/07/2022 07:37

I HATE this
Honestly, do not touch me without permission.

RockinHorseShit · 14/07/2022 07:51
