Can I share my utter stupidity here?

I’m too embarrassed to tell anyone in real life and I need to vent - I’ve even make changed because I feel so stupid!

Due on a flight from Stansted at 4. Got to Liverpool Street for my train in loads of time, because I’m sick of rushing about for things. Had so much time that I went to M&S for a sandwich and a drink. Took longer than I thought, so had to rush for the train.

Running along looking at the departure boards as I go. See a train for the time line is due with Stansted Airport listed as a stop. Run to the ironic platform 13. Get on train. Relax with said sandwich and drink. Wonder why we are stopping at Billericay. Panic slightly. Look at screens. Suddenly realise in horror that, from a distance, Stansted Airport and Southend Airport in small writing on departure boards look very similar 😳

I’m now in a £90 Uber, desperately hoping I make my flight. Send good vibes to a stupid woman 😥

Oh bless you! That's exactly the same sort of thing I'd do! I've ended up on the wrong train more times than I can mention.
Hope you get your flight.

I bought my fosterling new PJs yesterday because they have emergency vehicles on them and he LOVES cars/ambulance/etc. I was absolutely convinced I had the right size until it came to bed time and I opened the packet to put them on him. His poor little face dropped when I discovered the 2-3 size I thought I had bought were actually 0-3 months.

Good luck, I hope you make it!

thereisonlyoneofme · 09/07/2022 13:59

Yes well, I totally understand, I nearly ended up in Plymouth on the train instead of Portsmouth

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 09/07/2022 13:59

Aww man 😩 Fingers crossed 🙏

barbrahunter · 09/07/2022 14:02

Hope you made it, OP. It really is the sort of thing I'd do too.

BudgetTarzan · 09/07/2022 14:04

A friend's brother had moved out of London and she was going to see him at his his new house after work, he was going to meet her at the station. Never found him as it turns out Woking and Wokingham are entirely different places and not really near each other.

I think ‘stupid’ is being a bit harsh. It was a minor lapse in judgment is all, it happens to the best of us. I once got on completely the wrong bus, after I saw the one I wanted come around the corner behind another bus. I had a minor lapse in judgment and got on the first bus, instead on the second. I got home about two hours later, minus £20 in taxi fares and my composure 😂

I hope you make your flight!

IdiotCreatures · 09/07/2022 14:17

I've managed to get on the wrong train more than once...

BlodynGwyn · 09/07/2022 14:30

Many years ago I was on a flight from Heathrow to Washington DC. Not long after we made landfall somewhere over the eastern seaboard, the pilot announced what time we would arrive at Dullas International. Most of the Brits, including me, in my area of the plane thought we'd got on the wrong plane and we were going to Dallas, Texas. There was a minor panic until we all accepted our fate and some of us were actually looking forward to going to Texas as it was December and the weather was really cold in DC.

Chatterbait · 09/07/2022 14:49

Update - My Uber made brilliant time and I am through security with an hour to spare! Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Well done you! 😅Have a good trip.

Whybot · 09/07/2022 14:55

Yep
I missed a plane once , went wrong airport, , missed a train a few times , missed many buses , fallen asleep on train and missed station , got on wrong train etc .left fav jacket on a train. Etc.
not stupid , just done sone foolish things cos of lack of attention or trying to do do much , or working crazy hours and knackered.
mistakes are normal how we treat and label ourselves afterwards is more important . Xx

AdoraBell · 09/07/2022 15:02

Commute between Essex and London, fell asleep and ended up in the middle of nowhere, station is literally a ticket barrier and sod all else, after midnight with no buses or taxis available and no mobile phone, this was in the mid 90’s. Luckily managed to share a taxi back to home town with other passengers in the same boat apart from having a phone.

Hope you get your flight OP

That's not stupidity, its eyesight Grin

Glad you got there in time, relax and enjoy Wine

NannyGythaOgg · 09/07/2022 15:15

Sitting in the queue for a flight back to Manchester airport from Turkey. The queue at this point was mixed with some going to Manchester and some to Birmingham.

Luckily a fellow passenger asked me which of the two i was flying to. It was only then that my brain clicked into gear. I was supposed to be flying to Leeds Bradford. Caught it with seconds to spare (and they would have gone without me as I have carry on luggage only)

I will most definitely be ordering overpriced wine on the plane!

On my way to Heathrow Airport. Got on the wrong branch of the piccadilly line. Got the train back to where the line splits, and then got on the wrong branch AGAIN! Ended up getting an minicab. This was in the days before smartphones/uber so I was very lucky that there was a cab office at the tube station I got out at.

Georgeskitchen · 09/07/2022 15:40

I'm.paranoid about missing trains /planes so always arrive ridiculously early and end up hanging around bored stiff

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 09/07/2022 15:47

Aah that's good news 👍🏼

Fabulous. We’ve all done things like this and you’ve managed to swing it. Enjoy.

Glad you made it. I once drove a good 45 mins in the wrong direction to the place where I thought the airport I was flying from was. Turns out that was just a small runway and the airport was somewhere else. Just made it to the actual airport in time

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/07/2022 16:11

I have done exactly that thing! It is eyesight..

I didn’t make it, glad you did.

OldTinHat · 09/07/2022 16:11

Hooray that you made it!

I sat with my DM and DC at an underground station for just over an hour once, waiting for the train with the right colour to come along (London, hopefully you know what I mean). We watched trains come, empty, fill, we ate out sandwiches, wondered where our train was and then released every train was ours - we hadn't noticed that they had two colours on 🙄

diddl · 09/07/2022 16:20

Glad you made it Op.

I often do the same journey to visit friends-I have times/platforms written down, check & re check the boards, ask the driver/guard even though I can see it on the front of the train...
