DLA help

We've just been granted DLA for our son. I requested the money goes into our ‘bills’ account. Nappies, special milk, vitamins and food etc for our son get paid for that out of that account as part of the weekly shop.

I have just received a second letter and in that letter it states ‘you must not take a fee or take any payment from sons name’s DLA money for acting as an appointed person’

’you must always act in the best interests of sons name when managing and spending the DLA money you receive for them’

As I said the money will go into the bills account and everything he needs gets bought from that account.

But. The mortgage, gas, electric, water etc also gets taken from that account.

Do I need to set up a separate account for his DLA and then use that for his bits?

I’m so confused and this is completely new to me

Even if it goes towards other bills that’s fine - presumably you use gas and electricity for him? Quite possibly extra because of his care needs. He lives in the house you pay mortgage on.

unless your planning on using every penny of it to jet off on holidays without him I wouldn’t worry. Ds money just goes into my only bank account and goes towards everything

Most people just put the dla into their general bank account. The cost of living in general is all stuff that helps your son. You don’t have to justify how you spend any of it.

No one ever checks up what these disability payments are spent on.

Thank you all

Im all new to this and didn’t want anyone to think that we weren’t using it just for him.

We do use more electric and water for him!

This may or may not apply to you but if water bills are a struggle because someone uses extra water because of health or disability they may be able to get a reduction to their bill.
