Help me identify these berries..

These berries have come off a bush in my garden. Hard to pick as big spikes on the bush! They taste delicious but I have no idea what they are (or if they are poisonous!). Can anyone help identify them?

Blackcurrants?

viques · 07/07/2022 19:29

Post pictures of the bush and the leaves, those berries could be anything.

Those are blackcurrants. Best in jam or in a pie. Or gin or vodka.

Actually I could be mistaken - could be red gooseberries if there are horrid spikes. Do they taste sour? How big are they?

SisterRuth · 07/07/2022 19:32

Blackcurrants.

Octopuscrazy · 07/07/2022 19:33

They look like gooseberries

DeanStockwelll · 07/07/2022 19:34

Can you put one next to a coin so we can see the size .

They could be blackberries or Sloe berries , Sole bushes have spikes about a inch long and are lethally sharp ! and unless the berries are very ripe they are as sour as buggery

Mushroomlady · 07/07/2022 19:34

Possibly josterberries, blackcurrant crossed with gooseberry I think.

Seeline · 07/07/2022 19:34

Blackcurrants don't have thorns.

They look like red gooseberries.

Need to know size and leaf.

Those are blackcurrants - or possibly jostaberries. If you have too many they are easy to make jam with or you can freeze for smoothies etc.

Restlessinthenorth · 07/07/2022 19:36

I think red gooseberries may well be right! I've gone out for the evening but will post a photo tomorrow

They taste sweet (almost like a blueberry) but have a bit of a sour taste at the end

They look like blackcurrants but they don't have thorns on them.

THOSE ARE NIGHTLOCK, PEETA! YOU'LL BE DEAD IN A MINUTE!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/07/2022 19:56

Just seen you've eaten some. I should clarify that was a joke, in case you didn't get the Hunger Games reference Grin

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/07/2022 20:13

Although OP hasn't been back for a while, so maybe they were nightlock.

TooManyPJs · 07/07/2022 20:25

You really shouldn't eat berries or plants unless you know for definite what they are. Lots of plants and berries are poisonous.

PlntLady · 07/07/2022 20:33

Is the bush has thrones they will be red gooseberries. If not they are probably jostaberries. From your description of tasting like a blueberry I'd say probably a jostaberry. I have one of these bushes and I loves the berries! They make an amazin crumble. 🙂

Restlessinthenorth · 07/07/2022 21:11

I'm not dead folks, thanks for the concern! Pretty certain they are red gooseberries....crumble incoming! Thanks for all the advice
