Scatter Back Sofa?

Twopenny · 03/07/2022 13:32

Because life continues to be a swirling void of chaos, we are suddenly having to get a new sofa in a hurry, and are probably going to buy online.

We're leaning towards a scatter back one (i.e. with big loose cushions making up the back, for those who are not as au fait with sofa terminology as I am after a 24 hour crash course), but neither of us have ever sat on one like that for any length of time. Are they comfortable? Do you have to shove the cushions back into place constantly? Are they OK if the sofa isn't backed against a wall?

Any thoughts much appreciated!

I would never.

They don't last in my experience. They just turn into flat messes.

Littlebirdyouaresosweet · 03/07/2022 13:33

We had one. Loved it. Moved house and it didn't fit - was gutted tbh!! Think it was Shannon. Black and grey.

Sister has one with young kids, absolute nightmare would never have one.

Twopenny · 03/07/2022 13:36

Wow, responses seem pretty marmite at the moment!

I should say, we are just two adults - no kids or pets, so I don't think we're very rough on sofas.

Nope. Constant rearranging

DecimatedDreams · 03/07/2022 13:37

Hated it, looked a mess unless cushions put just so and had to be rezhoozhed every time someone got up.

Littlebirdyouaresosweet · 03/07/2022 13:37

We had dc and dpets. Never had any issues.

WhatIsThisPlease · 03/07/2022 13:39

I didn't mind mine but if you're averse to regular cushion plumping, it's not the one for you.

WafflyVersatileOohOoh · 03/07/2022 13:40

It’s a no here too, for the reasons outlined above.

I also think they’re getting quite dated looking.

Agree.

Rezhoozhed 😂 always wondered how to spell it!

EdithGrantham · 03/07/2022 13:44

We've had ours for over 7 years and the cushions are still really plump and it's very comfortable but agree with PP that they do look quite dated if that's important to you.

MinorWomensWhiplash1 · 03/07/2022 13:46

Big no

Twopenny · 03/07/2022 13:47

'rezhoozhed' Grin

I realise reading these responses that I actually hoping you'd all say you loved them, because I don't know if I have the mental and emotional strength left to pick out another sofa. My DP already covers our current, formal-backed sofa with a nest of cushions and blankets...will it really be that much worse (voice of faint hope)

Hated mines also for the reasons above. Never looked the same as it did in the shop, and I paid for apparently better cushions. Wouldn't have one again.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 03/07/2022 13:48

I think they are dated looking too, they were all the rage about 20 years ago but not so much now. We've never had one, I don't think we'd keep it tidy.

devonianBiatch · 03/07/2022 13:50

I have the Dury scatter back sofas from Very in blue and I was doubtful but they were the only ones I liked win budget. Two years in and they are like brand new , super firm and still look great despite two chunky adults and 4 dogs sitting in them every day. Kids have had sleepovers on them too and they just seem super durable

Pattypatience · 03/07/2022 13:54

God I missed a hard back sofa, my neck would be so sore as you cant rest your head back. Never again.

Anon564354 · 03/07/2022 13:55

I spent most of the day hitting/kicking the pillows trying to give them some oomph. I would never ever buy one again. They always moved so you’d end up on the hard back, they flattened almost instantly, never ever again.

Ducksurprise · 03/07/2022 13:58

Didn't expect to like it and bought in very similar circumstances to you (online and unseen due to a medical incident that happens on the old sofa)

If you are the sort of person to line up your tins, stickers facing forward etc then not for you as you will be forever moving the cushions. I straighten them before bed but takes seconds and had had a tough life.

riotlady · 03/07/2022 13:59

Hate them. You arrange the cushions one way so you’re actually comfortable when you sit down, then rearrange them again when you get up so they look nice

Clymene · 03/07/2022 14:00

I have on and I hate it.

Twopenny · 03/07/2022 14:01

Oh dear. Maybe we will have to re-think.

OP posts:
L1ttledrummergirl · 03/07/2022 14:03

We have one and never want another one. They are a total nightmare, the cushions never stay where you put them and need constant work.

fortheloveofcheesecake · 03/07/2022 14:18

Just got a new sofa....old one was a scatterback. I have waited years for it to officially die so I could replace it. Stupid cushions need plumping up constantly and never ever look as good as new again. So glad it finally gave up the ghost!!
