How do I ID my 13 year old?

DS starts high school in a week (they have a two week transition period at the end of term), will be getting the bus and will need a U19 photocard. They don’t do scholar or U16 anymore. He is 13 (moving up from middle school rather than primary)and 6’ - he really does need proof of age.

W Yorks Metro say he needs a valid passport or driving licence and proof of address in W Yorks to get a photo card. He doesn’t have a passport, or a paper bank account, he’s too young to drive and he doesn’t get any bills in his name! I don’t actually know how to ID him. All we have is his birth certificate and red book. He has premium bonds attached to my account and a “paperless” Go Henry account - also in my name.

I rang the Metro helpline. They said “I’m sure you’ll think of something”. The nearest travel centre to get one is 10 miles/30 mins drive away, so I’d really rather only go once!

Can you get something from the school or local authority confirming he is a current student at the school? Do they have a student pass or access card or canteen card?

You can apply for a post office Pass Card for teens online, you will need to upload a photo

No, but he hasn’t started yet. They use fingerprints in the canteen. I havn’t even got any “ To the parent/carer of….” letters, all the new starter stuff is generic. The letter about transport specifically says that the school do not provide evidence for bus companies!

Get him a passport?

That’s a lot of expense for child bus fares. We have no intention of going abroad in the foreseeable future.

You can also apply for a My ID Card which is a pass card but a different way of applying, its £15 for under 16s

If he had a bank account would that help? They are usually free to open.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 03/07/2022 12:24

What do you mean he ‘doesn’t have a paper bank account’? If he has a bank account of some description then some ID must have been provided for that? Normally birth certificate plus child benefit letter is ok for a bank.

He has a bank account, but it’s online online. I have tried to print a statement, but apparently the account doesn't allow me to do that.
