I have a senior support post in a school. I currently work 8:30- 4:30 5 days per week, TTO plus three weeks.
My DC are adults now and I am widowed. I don't need school holidays anymore, although I'd be loathed to give up the long breaks!
I do however find it very frustrating that I can never have a long weekend. I have a hobby which club members often travel to do e.g. F-M in a European city. Except for when they very occasionally fall in the holidays I can never go. Generally they avoid doing these trips in the holidays because of the cost. As a widow it's not easy to fund someone who wants to travel with you, especially in school holidays, so I have my main trips alone.
For various reasons, we need someone to lock and unlock the school. I'm thinking of offering to change my hours to 7:45- 5:30 M-Th, then I can do it 4 days pw and they'd just need someone for the other day. This gives me a full working week over 4 days and a long weekend.
However, it would remove what little flexibility I do have because obviously, I'd have to be there everyday. At present I wfh approx 2 days per month. Also it probably still doesn't give me a long enough weekend as they'd usually need F & M. It's possible occasionally I could switch my days, I suppose, if I negotiated it with whoever ends up doing the 5th day
It seems a good solution to enable me to move to a 4 day week (which would be also good for other reasons to the club weekends away) but it makes a long working day and ties me to the office.
FWIW most people in my role would tell you they work far more hours than contracted, but I never do, never have.
