passing out while on period?

DD has now passed out twice while she has her period, through pain.

She's going to ring the GP, but what can she do to prevent this? She already takes Feminax as soon as her period starts, and keeps on top of pain meds.

Does anyone else pass out with pain, and what helps you?

I've been told they've stopped selling it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

They stopped selling the old formula of paracetamol, codeine and hyoscine hydrobromide because apparently people where abusing it!

I personally wouldn't spend the extra money on it and would just buy regular ibuprofen for a third of the price!

@rainbowsandmagpies I think the poster above was saying that Feminax used to contain naproxen but they have stopped selling it now. Now it has a milder formulation.

Nurse and gynae patient here, I have fibroids and adenomyosis. Feminax appears to just be ibuprofen. Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal (same family as ibuprofen) but is a prostaglandin inhibitor. Prostaglandin is the hormone that causes the cramping. I've also found that reducing other inflammation in my body helps, I have a mild dairy intolerance and am quite sensitive to sugar so if I limit that it really helps with my pain. Don't rule out paracetamol as well, I can mostly manage my pain with Mefenamic acid and paracetamol.

I noticed a previous poster suggested naproxen and feminax - this is NOT advisable.

Not the normal (useless) feminax you buy in the supermarket with separate naproxen. There’s a feminax that IS naproxen that you can buy otc.

If she didn't have awful periods before having the coil fitted she should have it removed . Ideally she would then abstain from sex to see what her periods are like. If she isn't going to abstain then she shouldn't risk pregnancy and should start adequate contraception. If she is nervous of hormones then a mirena or similar hormone containing intrauterine device is her best option as the amount of hormone is very little. Depending on her past medical history the combined pill would also work well and does not commonly cause significant side effects. She needs to talk her options through with her GP. There is no point having a Gynae referral yet as they will advise removal of the coil in the first place.

DD has had this. She was prescribed mefanamic acid and it has made a big difference.

Would also suggest getting iron levels checked.

But agree, a non steroidal such as mefenamic acid or over the counter ibuprofen is a good first stop and a blood test for iron levels and or anaemia can help eg if she is becoming anaemia due to heavy blood flow the copper coil is probably not for her.
