Quick question about Fortnum and Mason!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/06/2022 20:26

I've just noticed that Virgin Experience are doing deals for afternoon tea for two at Fortnums for noticeably cheaper than just going into the store and paying on the day. Has anybody visited for afternoon tea via the Virgin voucher? Is it idiot-proof? Is there a catch?

Thanks if anybody can answer this very random question! Grin

The Ritz is nearby, so are a number of other places to have afternoon tea. I'd just look around Fortnum and Mason, buy some of their tea to take home, and go elsewhere to eat.

I’ve had afternoon there. It wasn’t amazing but worth it if you a voucher for cheaper. There are better places.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/06/2022 20:00

I've had tea at F&M before and thought it was nice but expensive for what it was. Don't want to go to the Ritz because I've heard it's too much like a conveyer belt and want it to be relaxing (and to have time to eat ALL the cakes and more!).

Anymore recs for better places at around £60 a head or less?

We had a wonderful afternoon tea at the horseguards hotel a few years ago.

Had an amazing afternoon tea at the Corinthian Hotel in Westminster. Was there for hours with copious refills of tea cheerfully dispensed by the lovely staff. An amazingly relaxing, luxurious experience.

Much better than the Ritz which was a distinctly lacklustre experience.

OnGoldenPond · 30/06/2022 21:45

Sorry, it's the Corinthia!

As I remember was about £60 per head.

The Wolseley do a lovely tea in very grand surroundings :)

For a glitzy experience, https://www.dorchestercollection.com/en/london/the-dorchester/restaurants-bars/afternoon-tea/ is head and shoulders above the rest.

The Wolseley is lovely, but more of an everyday treat.

The Ritz is very touristy.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/06/2022 22:14

Done tea at the Wolseley a few times and want something more exciting.

I want refills of everything not just tea!

Will have a look at the other recs. Thank you.

The Corinthia give you a second batch of sandwiches too. Followed by scones with clotted cream and jam, THEN a tray of gorgeous cakes!

We were so full that we couldn't finish all the cakes so they very kindly packed our leftover cakes in a pretty cake box tied with ribbon to take home!

Try Mandarin Oriental. It was amazing! Refills and such lovely staff. Amazing food.

OTOH my experience at Corinthia was not good and I will not return. They have no refills; teapots too big so tea gets cold quickly and after our 90 mins the waiter ignored us when I was trying to ask if I could have one last cup of tea before leaving. I was really disappointed.

Sorry to hear that about the Corinthia, was that recently? We went for my birthday last year. Hope it hasn't changed, was planning to go back again soon.

My DH is never full. He will only consent to afternoon tea at all if he gets ALL the food. That's why I thought F&M as the food never seems to stop.

I was extremely impressed by f and m! Lots of refills! Good room, nice to browse store.

I've had it at the shop in St Pancras and it was lovely. Superb service and the nicest tea I've ever drank, so crisp.

And good lord they were generous with the food it just kept blimmin coming! Like a sandwich and cake mezze 😁

It was my birthday and they packed up a box of carrot cake slices to take home too.

I'd love to go again.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 01/07/2022 17:41

I could happily spend a week in London afternoon tea-ing in all these lovely spots

Mydogsnotfat · 01/07/2022 19:05

Sketch is lovely

coolbottlesummer · 01/07/2022 19:21

I did fortnums AT last November and thought it was very good food wise. My only slight complaint was the tables are quite close together so they certainly get lots of people in.

plenty of food and coffee and tea. Refills of food and hot drinks throughout. We were even given a box full to take home.

Yes the trip to Corinthia was in April.

also have done Sketch which was wonderful and Montcalm in west end which was a conveyor belt.

CourtneeLuv · 02/07/2022 07:56

I wouldn't eat there. I know people that have been behind the scenes there 🤮

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2022 09:10

Tell me more about Sketch. I'd always imagined it as more style than substance. Am I wrong?
